going here next week. Does anyone know the best route from chester onwards to this site towing caravan. I'm not sure which roads are too hilly. Is it best to go round the coast via Conwy, Caenarfon etc.?

Yes, I think the A55 expressway would be the better choice.

Hi Hacksaw Bob I think that is the route the OP means as the A55 is the coast road to Caernarfon

That's the one - I think there's probably still a sign somewhere around Bangor? recommending that eastbound HGVs use the A55 rather than the A5.

Go along the A55, along to Caernarfon, there is a newish bypass which gives a nice run to Hafon y Mor.  I will try and find out how to get on to it.   I go passed it when I go to Beddgelert.

thanks everyone that's what I thought but the campsite sent different directions with the booking confirmation. I suspected they might not have taken the caravan into account.

The A55 is fine, but can get busy during peak periods (Fri night/Sat morning)

My suggested route via Corwen and Bala uses fast A roads with no steep hills, and uses the new Porthmadog bypass which saves a lot of time. You also avoid going  through Pwllheli town centre (coming down from the A55) as Hafan y Mor is a few miles to the east.

Doghouse,

Follow the A55 to Caernarfon, then when you pass the Macdonalds on the right hand side, get into the right hand lane going uphill and follow the Pwllheli signs,

These follow the A487 which has had improvements done, along the whole  of the road, and is superb for towing. there are no big hills, and no narrow roads to traverse,

The only narrowish road is when you get into Pwllheli itself, and even then the roads are big enough for large lorries and you will have no problems there.

Can I just state for the record that the a55 does not go to Caernarfon you leave the a55 at Bangor. The road to Caernarfon is well sign posted. Most of the signage for caernarfon is also marked Pwllheli and Porthmadog. There is only one main road leading through Caernarfon (although other roads do exist) to Pwllheli and Porthmadog so you shoudnt get lost. It's only when nearing the village of llanwnda that the route to Porthmadog or Pwllheli separate, and this is on a well signed roundabout. There are ways to avoid Caernarfon and Pwllheli if you desired, but the roads aren't as straight and well sign posted as the main route. So the time gained may be lost by the confusion. If you do get lost past and end up in porth, be comforted by the fact that the road from porth to Pwllheli is straight and at points duel carriage and that hafan y mor lies on it and only takes about 15mins.

Have a great time
