I am not mentioning the campsites I have contacted because they have all been very prompt and courteous about their replies.

So how do I tactfully respond to say I cannot afford to stay with them because their price is for 2 people (I'm a singleton) basic and EHU (don't have); two other sites had no availability. Fair enough, it's the owner's site and their policy and they have the absolute right to make that policy. My problem is that they've all been kind and helpful, I feel embarrassed about saying I can't afford it. £18 - £21 for one person in a pop-up tent -  yes, I am using a pitch but early October in Scotland is not high season - and pay for EHU even if not used.I don't want to whinge, but would like some constructive suggestions as to how I can tactfully say they're too expensive?

I would say 'thank you for your kind response, but as I will be camping alone, I was really looking for a campsite which has a charging structure for a single person that doesn't include EHU'.
A reasonable site will either understand, or offer you a cheaper price!

Just say it as it is - they do not cater for persons such as yourself so sadly you will not be able to join them.

Unfortunately sites will seek to maximise their revenue. People in your circumstances don't allow them to do that. It's a bit of a dilemma.

I don't think you need to worry about the tact, as such.

Just by reading your post, I get the impression you a capable of telling them the truth, without it coming across as rude.

You ask them the question, they give you their tariff, you politely refuse, along with an explanation of why.

You move on to the next site, they can sit and ponder whether they need to alter their pricing structure, because what you say makes perfect sense.
To the owners, I would say "half price" is better than no price!

Oh, and the fact that "you can't afford it" matters not one jot, imo!! The principle of it all far outweighs that issue!

Good luck in your search.

Just politely ask "is there any possibility of my getting it any cheaper as I am on my own and do not require EHU for my tiny tent".

Are you sure you wouldn't like to come here to Wales, by the sea

21st Sept to 18th Oct non electric single occupancy £7.00
19th Oct to 26th Oct non electric single occupancy £14.00

I find it difficult to believe that during the low season the campsites you have contacted have no flexibility in their prices.

I just replied "thank you for letting me know" when a site responded they do not offer single person discount.

To me, it is indicative that they do not cater or wish to cater for solo campers, and see no point in communicating with them any further.

Shame, as I really like the look and sound of the site.

it may be worth negotiating - as the weather has been so bad this year I think a lot of sites should welcome any custom and be flexible to attract solo campers. Solo campers are more likely to camp outside of school holidays.

If you don';t ask you don't get - try phoning/e-mailing and just ask for a discount .....

and let us know how you get on - I am a solo camper and go by public transport but have only heard of one site which gives a discount to walkers/public transport users

If you dont want to stay at a park for any reason, then i dont think you need to reply at all. Just book the park you like and forget about the other ones.

Don't all

Yes - they do - for example, a 'Member Back Packer' in low season can stay at Rosemarkie for £5.65 per night (even in the HIGH season, its only £6.75). If you're NOT a member, its £7.20 during the low season.

Remarkably got 3 nights for the price of 2 for our caravan in the october half term at Pakefield caravan park, I know it's not a solo camper in a tent but just to show you that there are offers out there to be had.

Hi, those dates are maybe not high season, but the schools may be off, which puts the cost up, Alex.

this is the one says it offers discount to walkers/public transport users but says minimum booking must be two people which is why I didn't go there - may try it next year if my camping buddy will come with me - she would be driving though with the two children (there isn't room for me and my kit as well as them in the car :( )

Apologies for long delay and many thanks for all your replies! Delay due to plans having to be changed, yet again, so will not be heading out now till November.

Anna and Campsiteranger - would love to come to Wales and those prices look excellent - unfortunately it's a tad far for a weekend from Mull!

One site will not give reductions (I didn't phone myself but a friend who is also solo and non-ehu did when looking for the following weekend, but that is the start of a lot of the Scottish school holiday fortnight, whereas next weekend isn't.). The other site has a hiker's rate (equivalent to the backpacker C&CC definition) but, as I'm in a car, I don't qualify and that hiker's rate was for the pitch and 2 people.   I could have gone to the nearest C&CC site to where I'm going but the amount of additional fuel required and the extra journey time involved made that a non-starter.

I did let the site know that I'd not be booking as I felt the charge was too high for a solo camper at this time of the year.  I wasn't even looking at half price - after all my tent takes up a pitch - but it's one person less using the facilities.

I've found a few sites that will give a single camper a reduced rate - even if it's only £2 a night - other than C&CC ones but they seem to be getting fewer and further in between.
