Thanks very much for all the responses so far, there are many good ideas.

Teversal, Scarborough, Dartmouth, St.Neots and Slapton all look promising. We have been to Devizes, Blackmore and Normans Bay and yes we have seen plenty of Ravenglass during our time in the Lakes.

I like the look of Barnard Castle and Moffet but likely to be too far to travel for us, and the Gate House is out as we will have at least one child with us.

I've also been looking at Salisbury site which looks as if it is in walking distance of the town.

Thanks again for the ideas - although still open for more!

Salisbury's not a village, though, is it?

(To be fair, it is described by VisitWiltshire as "the city in the countryside".)

If you're including historic cities on your list, though, Canterbury and Oxford sites are within walking distance/short bus ride of their cities' centres.

I did say near to a town or village! So I guess small cities should be included.

Oxford looks good although the railway might be too close.

What about moreton in marsh ( not a village but small town) site easy walk to town with several Cotswold pubs, an ask, Indian and a couple of other restaurants. Don't worry about reviews that mention building noise from new hospital, that's all complete so lovely and quiet again. Market day is Tuesday with lots of stalls and lovy country side to see.

Salisbury is a nice site, been there twice, and definitely within walking distance to the city.

We were at Oxford in August and didn't notice any railway noise.

The site in Moreton in Marsh is a real good base but it is Caravan Club - there is a farm site (Fosseway Farm) which is equally as close to the village which I think is C+CC.

Not a C&CC site but the CC site at Castleton in the Peak District. A short walk from the lovely village of Castleton with loads of lovely pubs and smashing walks.

And if you dont use CC sites, there is a C&CC certificated site just along the road.

Clitheroe C & CC site is nice and easily walkable into Clitheroe or there is a local bus. We were there in all the rain this year but it didn't put us off. There is also a train station in Clitheroe for trips to Manchester etc.

The CC sites in Moreton in Marsh and Castleton are in good locations, but I might feel a bit out of place in a Trailer Tent!

Clitheroe site looks great and there's even a Piccolino restaurant in the town - which is an added bonus.

You've all provided some great ideas - just roll on next year!

Wolverley is a lovely site and two pubs within walking distance, one near the back gate of the site, the other in the village. Both dog friendly, both do food - I haven't eaten in the nearest one but the village pub does very good cheap lunches. Walkable along the canal into Kidderminster.

Corfe Castle is about a 15-20 min walk into the village along a public footpath. The village has several pubs doing food and the whole area is lovely. The site is nice and quiet, too.

Hayfield is also a nice 15-minute stroll into the village, and there is a pub halfway along the route as well as 2 or 3 in the village. Not sure I'd go to the peaks at this time of year though!
