Hi,

I have bought myself a lovely gelert festival tent, ready for next year - not for festivals it has to be said, I just couldn't resist it's flowery charms - however, are there any sites that are safe for ladies? Might sound daft, but having just had a very uncomfortable experience on an evening out, I am a little worried about going camping on my own! Any advice gratefully received!

Soo

If you just sit in a pub or even on a park bench you have an outside chance of being pestered by a chancer & the same could be said for a random campsite. Its only a certain sort of man who will pester women & I guess you could meet one anywhere. Don't let it put you off camping.

I am sure you would be fine on most sites, Tigermouse goes on her own all over the place and seems to be fine, she would probably be a good person to advise you.
I guess she may be along soon, she also has a blog.

I have been away on my own several times and have never encountered any problems or felt unsafe.

I do tend to stay on Club sites when on my own in the tent (I am a bit braver for some reason when I'm in the caravan and will stay at most sites without fear or worry)

There are other members on here who regularly camp solo (Tigermouse and DK168 spring to mind) and I'm sure they will be along soon with some excellent tips and advice.

I knew someone was talking about me, my ears were burning! lol

Yes it's true, I've been camping alone for over three years now and love it. I've been to many different sites, both large and small, sometimes I've been the only person there, but no matter where I've been I've never felt unsafe or threatened in any way, and I've always found other campers to be very friendly. As long as you don't go camping in an isolated field in the middle of nowhere you shouldn't have any problems - stick to proper campsites, especially those where the owners or wardens are there 24/7, and you'll be fine. If your chosen camp site has an out-of-hours phone number for any problems then put that in your mobile just as a precaution; if it would make you feel safer you could also get one of those personal alarms that emit an ear-splitting screech when activated but tbh I really don't think you would need one - I don't have one and have never felt the need for one.

Tbh, there's probably more chance of you getting knocked down while crossing a road than there is of anything bad happening to you on a camp site, so don't worry about what 'could' happen, it probably never will - just get out there and give solo camping a go, I don't think you'll regret it. My blog address is in my home page if you want some inspiration

I go camping on my own too, I generally feel very safe, safer in fact because I'm within shouting/screaming distance of help.

There are plenty of us on here who camp solo without a problem.

I wouldn't go to a site that wasn't staffed at night though. I particularly favour C&CC sites as they seem to feel safer, somehow.

Thank you everyone for your messages and advice - you have encouraged me to go for it! I will take a look at your blog Tigermouse , and I think I will join the C&CC, used to be a member when I had a caravan. I am used to going everywhere and doing everything on my own, but not camping....yet ... :-)

I don't camp on my own ( not yet, but one day!) but take my kids and have never had a problem. But, I do have a Gelert Cabana in Liberty Rock and your tent won't be short of attention, always have people coming over to ask about it so never short of someone to chat with. So if you don't want to be disturbed, you might need a more subtle tent!

Do you know, I had that very thought this morning. Mine is also the Liberty Rock, and as you say, they are more than a little eye catching! Hmmm, I might have to get a second tent, or borrow someone's kids or dog!
