We used to go via the A50 to Uttoxeter, then Stone, Nantwich Whitchurch, Audlem, Rhuabon and onto the A5, taking the Bala road over to Criccieth and Portmadoc (Sp?)

It can be a bit tricky taking the coastal road beyond Bangor, quite a few roadworks in the area when we were last down in the begining of last month.

Not recommended to take a caravan through Conwy town centre if you were thinking of using it as a stop off from the coastal road (A55) due to the narrow arches of the towns walls and small carparks. its a few years since we were down at the Haven park, but I do recollect a couple of toll roads in the area, so a bit of loose change at the ready would be useful.

You don't need to drive through Conwy Town Center at all, you by pass it as well as Bangor along the A55.

I had  a clear run when I went along that direction 2 weeks ago.

the coast road seems to be about 20mile longer round and faster route when you put it in goole maps, which is the safe option?

Depends on when you're going.  If you're going Friday night before half term, then I would head inland, and particularly avoid the M6 between Stoke and Knutsford, the M56 between Runcorn and Chester, the A55 at Abergele.... you get my jist.

If there's no traffic then going via Chester and the coast road will certainly be easier as it'll be dual carriageway most of the way.

There is no real right or wrong answer. The route you have on Tom Tom is all major roads and will get you there in as much time as all the others. There is no time saved merit to any of the routes. There are differences in distance travelled, but none really in time because of the nature of the roads. The a55 is the major dual carriage way for north Wales, so if you prefer big roads go that way. The a5 is narrow, it's just about wide enough for two lorries. It's very scenic but has lots of twists and turns.

If you aren't confident towing I'd go a55. All the routes shown are as 'good' as the other. It all comes down to confidence.

>>IS this a good route?

All apart from the last few miles, where your suggested route cuts across on the B4411 to Llanystumdwy. it's a two lane B road. enough room for oncoming cars, but you'll have to stop if a bus/tractor/lorry is coming towards you.   Other option is to stay on the A499 into Pwllheli.

as a Gog (Person from N Wales ) who lives in London.

A50 to stoke A500 to M6 , M6 to M56, then either

1) M56 onto A494/A55

2) M53 onto A55

both have hills Aston Hill past Queensferry on option 1 or Warren from broughton up to Buckley turn off on option 2.

the A55 has a few hills but a good chance to keep revs and torque the Northop bypass and Rhuallt hill are the 2 biggies Rhuallt being the big big one, but thats down hill going West.

once past Bangor pick up the A487 towards Caernarfon and follow signs for Porthmadog. after that there is only one route

the A5 is a winding road with little scope for passing and you really don't want to annoy those behind.

Conwy is missed by using the tunnel and has been bypassed for 21 years !!!!!!!!!
