I wasnt sure where to put this post but we bought a 91 Bailey Scorpio in February it had a bit of damp in it but thanks to reading this forum its been sorted, we have had a great first year caravaning and found a camp site that we really liked so decided to site it there next year, only to be told after we had been up to choose our pitch that our van was too old. Is this a common problem, and does any one know any sites around the Lancashire, south Cumbria area that takes older vans.

I have seen this at some sites and think its a bit of a cheek don't see what difference it makes how old the van was as long as its in good condition.Ian

Some sites do have a 10 / 12 year ruling - as said before its crazy. We once had a 50's van on a seasonal pitch and the people had a car all sprayed to match each other - was a lovely sight to see. You are best looking around, but dont be put off because there are lots of sites that dont have this ruling.

I've heard this with seasonal pitches and I can understand that to a point having witnessed some of the decaying vans on some pitches - mind you its not their age thats the problem its the lack of maintenance to them.   I think its madness on touring pitches as there are plenty of beautiful older vans but I guess its easier to put in the T&Cs than 'no clapped out heaps' which is what I am presuming they are trying to avoid!

We have just removed our van from a seasonal pitch at Bay View at Bolton le Sands and there were lots of older, well looked after caravans there. Ours is a 2000 van in showroom condition but we have also found that we wouldn't be welcome on some sites due to their age restrictions.

I've never heard of this ruling before and have never heard of anything quite so ridiculous!

Before our motorhome we had a '99 Bailey caravan and it was in good condition but I would have been furious if a site had refused because of "age"......how in this climate can sites refuse business because of the way something looks?!  What next?  People?

They've been doing it for a while and it's not just caravans.

I have been back in touch with the company who run the site and they say because my van is older they would struggle to cover it for insurance purposes ???  The decision has been made by the site manager/caretaker , but I am most welcome to holiday at the site next year. I dont think we will be going back, we will just look for somewhere else.

I think the prob here is not so much insurance but the number of older vans that get abandoned on a seasonal pitch. After a couple of years om the same pitch and the fee becomes due, maybe £1200 or so and the owner is not using the van so often, possibly no longer has the towing capability, the van now only being worth a couple of hundred quid, the cheaper option is to abandon. The result of this is the site owner is stuck with a tied up pitch that will not earn any revenue for as long as it takes to establish that the van is abandoned and the owner uncontactable. This could take a long time after which the site owner still has the problem of disposing of the van by which time it could have deteriorated to a decaying hulk. We've all seen these on sites, not very pleasant, rather sad in fact. There are many pristine older vans in use and they are generally welcomed on site
but can fully understand why a site owner would be a little apprehensive about taking older vans on their seasonal pitches...........Mick

and believe me its not just the older vans that can get abandoned! age doesnt seem to come into it. We have had new vans that have not seen anyone at them for 6 months or more they dont stay looking new for long then!

Hey,

There is a site called Sportsmans Caravan Park. You can visit there website sportsmanscaravanpark.co.uk and they take second hand caravans. There have a few empty plots available for static caravans. Hope this helps, there are also based in Lancashire. The website has all their contact details, etc for you to have a look.

Kind Regards
