WHEN?? It's a perfectly decent A road past the site.
In summer it's very pleasant and in winter the road is often blocked by snow. Today, it's cold and showery.

Now if you want to know what it's simply lke - the approach from the Aberdeen side follows the Dee, so is fairly flat. From the Perth side, the road goes over glenshee, so it's quite a clinb but no real problem for a modern vehicle.

When we visited that site we had a heat wave!!! We approached from the south and the road is as Capt Lightning describes.

Thanks for the replies I forgot to mention the plan is to go in February so we can go skiing in Glenshee, we tow with an large estate car and have never been up that way so we were just after advice really, the fact the site is open for the winter sports season suggests it's accessible that time of year but I thought it may help to speak to others who have done it to let us know their experience

Right, now I know. Skiing has been good the past few years (not that I ski, but The Invercauld is my favourite site).

The road from Aberdeen direction should probably be OK , though it has had problems at times. The road is virtually flat - with exception of a few small slopes eg. leaving Ballater. Note - you can bypass Ballater, but DON'T - go through the village - much better road.

As far as Braemar you should be OK, but if the snow is 'good', the gates will be closed just outside the campsite. You can hire ski equipment in the village and I believe you can get transport by land rover to the ski slopes.

There are two OK ish hotels in the village, but there is a pub/restaurant with a good reputation(forgotten its name) more or less behind the Highland games field.
Very little else in the village - a small Co-op, a decent butchers and some touristy shops.

Excellent walking / climbing area accessable from site. Lots of wildlife and a top class golf course (Not in Feb !!)

Thank u for your replies it's much appreciated, I think we will see what the weather has in store for us this winter and then make a decision closer to the time. It's a catch 22 situation, in the fact we want there to be decent snow for the skiing but are worried about taking a caravan there and getting snowed it or stuck as its a long way from home in Essex to go back to collect the caravan!

hi kerry 362. i think taking a caravan up A93 in febuary would be crazy idea if snow is forcast.i have worked in the area and the weather can change by the hour.i have seen the snow gates at glenshee village closed and raining heavy and 5 miles up the road at ski centre very heavy snow.also heavy traffic on the narrow road could get caravan damaged.

I agree that It would be unwise to use the A93 in bad weather - from the Perth side. Bear in mind, the object is to get to Braemar. It would be much safer from the (level) Aberdeen side, and as I said, I believe there is transport from Braemar to the ski centre.
