They travel all the way up to Carlisle or Workington to save a few pennies on groceries,...and presumably then fill up with deisel to get back home? Surely not

Surely Yes! its not pennies its pounds! and choice, and variety in shops, sometimes people want to buy other things apart from "outdoor stuff" which Keswick very definatley do's not cater for!

It largely depends what you are after for a holiday. Yes North Lakes offers great walking and with Ulswater not being too far from Penrith you can have a ride on the "Steamers", but I would advise not ruling out what can be found within an hours drive of Kendal. The Trough of Bowland, Kirkby Lonsdale, The Yorkshire Dales (Reeth), Arnside and Silverdale areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, a bit further afield takes you to Wastwater, The passes of Wrynose and Hard Knot are a fantastic experience. These are just a smidge of what is on offer in South Lakeland/ North Lancashire/ West Yorkshire and should NOT be discounted, but wherever you end up you are sure to enjoy your holiday :-)

Personally, I would find it hard to choose between the north and south lakes - both have lots to offer. Couldn't you share your time between the two or stay somewhere in between?
