Please forgive me if this is else where - please direct me!

I am eager to camp at a site that allows campfires but is near to rock pools. Does anyone know where may fit the bill? Two families, in tents, with kids, anytime between May and September.

My two boys (6 and 3) are eager to get their feet wet, we're happy to rough it , but if there are other facilities for kids, great.

We are happy to travel, from Oxford,so Dorset coast, Cornwall, Norfolk? Where are the rock pools....?

Many thanks

Shell Island, Wales fits the bill for rock pools and fires.

Graham,

Many thanks indeed for such a speedy reply. It does tick those boxes.

I think, to further refine my criteria (or be fussier), I have looked at their website and feel we'd prefer somewhere more....intimate.

Is North Wales a good place in general for rock pools?

Many thanks indeed.

...but note (from their website) "Campers are not allowed fires on the ground, on any part of the site/ sand dunes. Fires must be raised off the ground in a firebin or a B-B-Q, with an air gap in between."

Cae Du, the site further down the coast near Tywyn, not the Beddgelert one of the same name, allows open fires and is much smaller than Shell Island.

Dolgamedd...... Perfect. We have xhildren of the same age, there are 5 familes and we all have a wonderful family camp here. Open fires on the rivers edge, thw koda throw stones in the river all day long and love it. Its not a dangerous river, my 5 yr walked across it last year with hoa friend to fetch a football that had purposely been kicked over so they coud fetch it
. Its about 20 mins drive drom the beach, really sheltered ans really juat wonderful.

I dont like giving away our wonderful sites, but this is a spcial place and children loooove it.

Hi Doozer999,

This may be a little late but if you're looking for something more inimate you need to get yourself to Troytown Farm here.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/results3.asp?search=troytown&by=sitename

Beautiful island, rocks galore for you boys to explore, and right in front of the site as well. As long as you avoid the busy two August weeks and the world Gig Championship weeked early May it will feel quiet. A wonderful natural playground for your boys and they allow campfires on a firepit on site and have seen people with fires on the rocks in front of the site.

It's a bit of a trek but that's what makes it have the feeling you're looking for.

Just realised you don't say if you're in a tent or van, so may not be suitable!

Tunnels Beach in Ilfracombe (north Devon) is ace for rock pooling - it has been voted in the top 5 locations in UK - there is also a Victorian swimming pool in the natural rocks. Unfortunately there is an entry fee but great place!

We stayed at Little Meadow, lovely campsite but no fires. There are plenty if sites around that area - Woolacombe, Croyde etc and loads to do (good surf beaches).

Thank you all SO much for your replies to date. There are some great looking places detailed. Some look truly magical, like SScilly but alas too far....this time! Others tick many boxes, and not others....

But I am grateful for all you suggestions.

I am still looking (we'll be in a couple of family tents), so please do keep the suggestions coming.

I am kinda thinking that anywhere in Devon/Cornwall/Gower may fit the bill as there are many sites and many beaches. Don't mind a short trip in the car to a beach....

Thanks again - Happy Camping one and all!
