Hiya guys, can anyone recommend a family friendly campsite in the Lake District? I know that there are threads on sites in the area , but I'm getting confused ( tbh it doesn't take much! ).

We prefer the small friendly sites rather than the larged ones. It needs showers and toilets, a play area for the kids who range in age from 6 to 13.
Also we plan to go in August is there any problem with midges?

Thanks
Ian

Dont know about midgies but the worse bite I ever got was in the Lake District from a horsefly. Still have the scar to prove it!

The Quiet Site near Ullswater is lovely, meets your criteria - check out the reviews and they have a good web site.

Also the NT site at Langdale - awesome views and good facilities, but much more remote - so depends what you like.

Never had problem with midges in the lakes... but sites actually on lake sides or with woodland are probably worse.

Indeed we have just cancelled our pitch on the CC Park Coppice for July as we had forgotten all about the Midges, and how tasty they tend to think my flesh is, not good, especially as im diabetic and prone to things becoming infected.

The 'Midge Months' are from mid June to early September, it seems like its the warmth and humidity that encourages them to bite, especially around lakes and streams ect. Its a definate no-no to go bare legged or footed around these times, especially in Woodland and in the evenings when they tend to swarm more.

Lovely site in Boot - Eskdale Camping and Caravan Club Site.

If you get bored with the playground on the campsite then there's a river with stepping stones and acres of play area within 5 mins walk of the site.

Never had any problems with Midges around Pooley Bridge area. Great base for  seeing the lakes and a few sites to select from.

Never stayed on the Quiet Site but have heard good things about it and it looks nice when you drive past.

Stayed at Park Foot which is a large site but if its not too busy and you go in the camping field and find a nice spot it can be very nice (I am not a large/busy site kind of person). Never had midges at Park Foot.

Hi, I like in the Lake District, if you want to ask about any area in particular I will try and help.
Unfortunately we have yet to find a 'small' family site that we love that isn't heaving. We have regularly stayed at Fisherground in Eskdale and have always loved it but unfortunately the prices have escalated over the years, fantastic location, campfires and childs play area. We also stayed at Coniston Old Hall Farm which again is beautiful, maybe a concern if you have young children as next to lake, no play area but well placed for facilities. We loved thornthwaite farm just outside Keswick, immaculate farm and fields with very helpful owners and not too busy, but no onsite play area for kids. Gillside at Glenridding is another beautiful location, local pub just up the hill, no play area or other facilities nearby.
I have never found midges to be an issue in any particular month, however if you are near water, go prepared, Nothing like the ISle of Skye though, we turned up and everyone was wearing full midge headgear and clothing!! ie. netting.
