I'm fancying visiting the Saddleworth (Oldham) Brass band festival which is held on Whit friday, May24th.

Can anyone suggest any camping or caravan sites, close enough to walk into Saddleworth or one of the other local villages holding the event.

If it close by the Huddersfield canal, that would be an advantage as I could take my canoe and paddle into Saddleworth.

There are a couple within walking distance of a contest.
There is 'Moorlands' at Denshaw - a short walk downhill takes you to the village where the contest takes place.
Also, there is 'Wellihole Farm' which is within walking distance of Uppermill and Greenfield contests.
If you have never been before, it can be very busy depending on which village contest you got to.
We have been many times as we only live a couple of miles away from Denshaw.
If you need any more info just ask!

Sorry, forgot to say that Wellihole farm is virtually next to the Huddersfield canal!

The two nearest are  Well I Hole Farm, for Greenfield contest ,and the canal.

The Carriage House  Standedge, with bus to Delph for the band contest  and you would either have to paddle round a small reservoir or travel to to canal.  You  are actually nearer the canal at this site, unfortunately the canal is in the tunnel underneath it.

Moorlands Caravan Park.   Denshaw contest just down the hill.

Edit.

Sorry to repeat Brian's post , They changed the name of the Carriage house site and I couldn't find the link

..and thanks to you as well, Oldham.

I've now booked into Wellihole. I'm told it's within walking distance to Greenfield, where the top bands appear.

I'm told there are about 26 locks within 2 miles on the canal, so I'd be carrying my canoe rather than paddling. So I'll just explore by foot

All sorted and very grateful

The biggest Brass Band Competition is Uppermill and not Greenfield. You are still within walking distance though. Just walk along the canal there. Just so you are aware, there are no facilities at Well-i-hole Farm by which I mean showers/toilets. Also, if the weather is bad, it floods and floods badly. I'm not trying to put you off, just making sure that you are prepared. If the weather is a bad forecast, make sure you aren't right down on the flat and, if you are in a caravan, make sure you don't have your awning erected or it will get ruined. Hopefully, it should be a great weekend with good weather and I will be going to my hometown of "Mossley", just down the road from Greenfield for that week.

There are two very good pubs nearby, the Royal George, which you might be able to see at the top of the hill and The Roaches Lock which is about 5 minutes walk away towards Mossley that does great food and a few real ales.

Thanks for the heads up, Suzanna. Forewarned is forearmed.

If it's very wet weather, I might decide to take my canoe after all.

5 mins to real ales is a bonus!!

Just to alleviate your worries, or not,  It's the Pennines, it rains,    a lot!

it gets windy up here

The flooding was last year, Oldham was not alone in this, there is higher ground.

It has  basic toilet and shower,

Use your judgement, own facilities and after a few pints you will neither know nor care.

As for which location for the bands,  Toss a coin, the bands travel round the venues no particular rhyme or reason.  They phone through to the next couple of venues and the one with the least bands waiting is the next stop.  You never know who is coming next .

Have a look youtube watch a couple of video's from different locations and decide which is for you.

Still an experience not to be missed.

I play in this contest every year. We always try and do uppermill early as theres usually troubl with local youths fuelled by alcohol later in the evening . we've had our bus pelted and frankly we don't feel safe driving through there late on. Greenfield is a beautifu; venue, well organised and never any trouble. we love playing there
