Hi All.
Me and my wife usually go to the New Forest for 12 days, we go because Wildlife is part of our holidays, with Squirrels, Rabbits, Birds ect running around the site and we get great joy in feeding and photographing them. This year we are going away in March but cannot go the 300 miles to the New Forest (we live in York) because of a Health situation with a loved one, so we have to cut down the distance in case we have to come home early, so we are looking for a site with wildlife somewhere around the Lake District or Cumbria areas, I have spent ages looking at the Camp Site Search but cannot find anything, so I am hoping some of our members can help me, I have a Caravan with Awning so it will have to be a caravan site, any ideas.
Thanks
Regards
Higgins

Can't think of a site in those areas that will match that kind of wildlife. Some nice sites that are not too far for you are Leekworth at Middleton Teesdale (not far to Cumbria from MT) and Knight Stainforth is at Settle is nice too. At Leekworth if you walk upstream along the river you will see some wildlife, it is very rural and you can hear Owls. The guy in the tent next tent to we was a wildlife spotter and kept going for walks and on returning listing everything that he had spotted, so the wildlife must be around just I didn't see much of it.

You could check out The Quiet Site, Ullswater. There was loads of wildlife on site when we were there; owls hooting and bats flying about above, lots of birds, rabbits etc. I guess you'd get this at plenty of rural sites in this area though. The NT sites may be a good option, the one at Langdale is lovely, but not sure if they take vans... The CCC site at Eskdale is also highly regarded on here, although no first hand experince so not sure on the wildlife.

Wherever you chose to stay, if you're in the lakes, don't miss a visit to see the Osprey at Bassenthwaite - awesome!

Alternately somewhere around Silverdale/ Arnside might suit - it is an AONB and nearby is Leighton Moss RSPB bird reserve and the area is known for the rare bittern. Hollins Farm sounds nice, on my list of places to stay.

A wee bit further away than what you are in a position to consider at the moment but maybe one for the future.....

Low Glengyre Farm CL, near Stranraer

The roe deer come to graze on site, a tawny owl perches nearby to begin it's search for food, a glen on your doorstep, barn owls nearby and red squirrels in the glen.  Perfect for nature lovers!  We don't have many rabbits but hares are plentiful!

Don't know if you think it's too far, but the Secret Garden is good for wildlife.

I get a newsletter email from The Quiet Site, latest one lists the wildlife sightings so far in 2013, they include:
  • Otters - Two seen at dusk hunting for fish on the west side of Ullswater
  • Red deer - Numerous in the area
  • Owls - The Quiet Site was not so quiet one night in January when the owls seemed to be having a party!
  • Buzzards - Spotted hunting over Little Mell when not attacking my landrover
  • Hares - Often seen on the road down to the lake
  • Cat - Likes to dress up as a Granny..
  • Badgers - On the local roads after dusk
  • Rabbits - Numerous
  • Red squirrels - Very tame at this time of year as they are hungry
  • Brown trout - Seen in the mouth of the otter!
