Hello, after reading the reviews on here, we have decided we would love to visit this site as everybody is saying how nice it is and we already know how nice the area is. The only thing putting us off is the fact that almost everyone is saying how bad the approach road is. Has any body been and experienced this?
Can anyone reccomend any other site in this area, must have excellent wc and shower facilities and nice open views.

                    Cheers Ian & Karen

Hello Ian and Karen

Went to Howgill on our 1st venture in a caravan a few years ago.Looking back I suppose the roads were a little daunting especially first time out, theres the arch at Bolton Abbey, the single lane Barden Bridge then a couple of miles on narrowish bendy roads.
Its not enough to worry yourself about though, once you have done it you will wonder what the fuss was about, and worth it when you get there.

We havnt been to Howgill Lodge since as we joined the Caravan Club not long after, and now we are regulars at the site they have at Strid Wood.We love it there.
I can also drive through the arch now with my eyes closed
Regards Lancastrian

Hi Lancastrian, thanks for your reply, it's always good to get a second opinion, think we'll definately give it a go. I've also thought about Strid Wood as they appear to take non members too.

               Many thanks
                  Ian

Hi we have been a number of times,it was in fact the first site I had ever towed too and we managed with no major dramas. A lovely site with nice walks along the river to the pub and Burnsall

Hi, we visited Howgill a few years ago and would deffinately go again.  Don't let the roads put you off.  If you read the reviews for the hundreds of different sites, there are loads of sites with "challenging" access but if the site accepts caravans then it must be safe to do so.  I remember closing my eyes as we went over Barden Bridge (I wasn't driving tho') and passing through the arch made me breath in (lol) but seriously, they are nothing to worry about.  I pick the sites we visit and I research/read the reviews and some of the comments about poor access have put me off booking BUT I am not the one doing the driving, I stress over things which my OH (the driver) doesn't bat an eyelid about.  If whoever is driving is confident and ok at towing then I have no doubt you will be fine.  Enjoy. Denise.

Hi Denise, thanks for your reply, we're really looking forward to visiting this site, paid the deposit today so no going back now and I'm sure the road will be fine.

I'm old enough to remember camping there in the early Sixties with Central Yorkshire D A, we also camped across the valley at Skyrehome.

We used to go when I was a kid for the ham and egg teas, and the biggest meringues you ever saw in your life!  Being born and brought up in Ilkley we did alot of walking in lower Wharfedale.
