I have a couple of weeks off in August. My wife wants to go to Wales but as we have family in SW Scotland I suggested somewhere close to Galloway forest instead.
The only thing is the midges... How bad is it likely to be? Will the fact we've had a long winter mean they're not too bad?
Can anyone recommend a forest site in that area? Our family are in Auchencairn, Lockerbie, East Riggs and Annan.
If the weather conditions are right the likelihood is that the midgies will be bad if you camp in a forest site in that area (and that's coming from someone who can "manage" the dreaded midge!) the area is lovely though so depending on your midgie threshold you might still want to go for it.
On the outskirts of the forest is Barrhill and Queensland sites - not been but they get good reviews and you should be better re midgies.
You may prefer to go a bit more "coastal" to avoid them. I would recommend Solway View, a lovely site and a great location for exploring the D&G area and still not too far from the Galloway Forest.
You could try Kippford holiday park its not far from the mabie forest, or dalbettie it has gorgeouse forest walks from the site,

You would stand a better chance of not being to bothered by the dreaded midge if you go coastal as you usually get a light wind even on a good day.
They don't like wind or a nice hot summers day out in the open,I never pitch near trees if possible.
They do like damp conditions especially after its been raining and around lochs, rivers etc. They also like the shade under trees and around shrubbery etc..
Pretty much what has been said already.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Definitely costal would be better, their is some lovely sites on and near the coast, in Dumfries and Galloway, Kippford is lovely and they have a fab camping and caravan site.
------------- Had to give up the camping due to the rubbish Weather and Wind, so got myself a campervan!
Hello 3narf. Have a wee look at Solway View near Kirkcudbright. Never been but we are going next month. It gets great reviews and is on the coast so hopefully not so bad for midges!
