The thing with caravans/campers is the season is longer than for tents so a lot of sites are encouraging them as they keep the money coming in longer. One site we stay at each year has now turned one of its fields over to caravan/campers only no tents. Another we stayed at last year had 56 0f its 60 EHU pitches taken by caravan/campers with only 4 tents, the centre tent field with no EHU pitches only has 5 tents on it all week. On talking to staff we were told that virtually from April when they open until new year when they close all the EHU pitches will be booked and of these 95% will be caravans/campers. The tent field however will be entirely dependent on weather and mostly will only be really busy during school holidays.

Given that unless camping midweek at this site has changed greatly over what it has been for the past 10 years- I expect there will be lucky to be more than 6 tents in a site that can accommodate over 100 units, so obviously crammed in!!
Call me old fashioned, but I feel this is exploiting and despite visiting the site for more than 30 years, I will now be taking my business elsewhere.
I do agree that paying a supplement may be fine- but not to the extent of £16 extra per night when the site is empty.
I have written to the site, who also did me the courtesy of not replying.
Customer service in action.

Has it changed management or something? Seems awful that such loyal customers are being treat so poorly. I can understand your reason for wanting to return on this occasion but I think you were right to write to them even if they haven't done you the courtesy of a reply.

Out of interest, what would be the area covered by one of these huge super-dooper tourers with awning? (I have no idea!) Do they get charged supplements?
Most sites charge extra for awnings.

I now have been telephoned and received an email from the general manager of Waren caravan and campsite, offering to refund my deposit and also stating that they are reviewing their supplements for large tents, given that some tunnel type designs while being long, are narrow enough to fit into standard pitch.
I feel that they have listened to my comments and I am pleased to see them refunding my deposit. Hopefully they can come up with a pricing structure that maybe applies at times of high volume- eg weekends, bank holidays, peak season- but also enables some fairness when the site is quiet.
From my PoV a sensibly sized family tent is what we used to camp in. It was a 6 berth frame tent, most likely very similar in footprint to a Samara 600 which is nearly 27sqm.
Based on that, 30sqm would seem a sensible limit that allows reasonably sized family tents while some of the giants may have a suppliment to pay.

Yes and per person per night aswell on some sites, even though one of the persons is 3.....it really does vary from site to site as to what they charge, what they charge for and whether they can even get us on.....we just shop around, the good ones are out there!

Sadly I have checked the site website further to my reply from the general manager- and despite his assurances- their prices remain unchanged!!!!! How sad in my view. Also not very good customer service-obviously was just telling me what I wanted to hear in order to get rid of my complaint.
So after patronising this site as a family for many decades- we will not be back.
I also forgot to add- we stayed at a lovely site nearby- Springhill Farm, Seahouses. Couldn't be better and prices half what Waren were looking for. no outsize extra charge, good facilities. While visiting I drove into Waren to satisfy my curiosity regarding tents having plenty room- would you believe it- not a single tent at Waren! in all my visits since 1977 I have never seen that- how sad-but no wonder with their ridiculous charges.
