I have been looking at sites in this area.
There are good reviews about the sites . But can anyone tell me about the area around here. Someone said its too near Peterborough . What's wrong with Peterborough .
It's quite a long way for us to travel .
Any help appriciated .

They are both excellent sites.

We prefer Houghton Mill as its smaller, next to the river, and you can walk/cycle into St Ives. A couple of really nice pubs within a few minutes walk (good food, beer & beer gardens if we ever get any sun).

Not far from Cambridge which is definately worth a day there, have an informative an pleasant trip on one of the student-powered punts on the Cam.

Never been to Peterborough so I don`t know what the problem is supposed to be! Whatever the `problems` are they certainly don`t stretch as far as these sites - is someone winding you up?

Houghton Mill site is absolutely nowhere near Peterborough, it's by the river in a lovely little village situated between Huntingdon and St. Ives. The mill itself gives milling demonstrations on certain days, there are locks on the river just by the mill and you can sit and watch the boats going through. If you have a dog there's a large area of grassland across the river ideal for dog walking. A small shop and a nice pub in the village, a brilliant garden centre about a mile up the road towards Huntingdon, also Hartford Marina with a nice pub/restaurant doing good meals. There's a Tesco supermarket about three miles further along and a lovely riverside walk in Huntingdon itself. Godmanchester is just across the river from Huntingdon and has a lovely riverside park. St. Ives is about three miles the other way from Houghton Mill, lovely little riverside town with a huge market on bank holiday Mondays. I've stayed at Wyton Lakes several times - it's a lovely site on the main road opposite the garden centre - and I really like the area.

Grafham Water is miles away from Peterborough too. I've never stayed at the site but I've been all round the lake and it's a lovely area with some nice little villages. You can cycle all the way round - bike hire is available from a couple of places - and there's a watersports place with a nice cafe. Good for dog walking too but they have to be kept on a lead round the lake.

I can't comment on Peterborough as I've never been so I don't know what the problems are supposed to be, but don't let other comments put you off either of these two sites, honestly they really are in nice areas.

Hi,

I work in Peterborough; both sites are no ware near the city.  Have been to Grafham Water for the day on occasion and it is nice - a world away from the "city".  That said I know of a couple who take their Van to Ferry Meadows which is in the city perimiter though on a lake and you would not know you are near a city.

You could also look at sites near Rutland Water (just a bit bigger than Grafham but bigger).  Lots of open space and good pubs nearby as well as Stamford.

Cheers

Dan
