Hello everyone,

I have been searching and searching and cannot find the site that I can remember going to years ago with my family. I wondered if anyone on here knows it?

The details are a bit fuzzy (and I cant ask the family) but this is what I remember:

1. It would only have been in the York, Harrogate, Thirsk, Ripon type of areaa. (my parents didnt venture too far)

2. It was on a river/canal - possibly long boat but maybe just regular boats

3. There was a pub on site, near to the water - served food and could sit at tables overlooking the water

4. There was a largish playground with climbing frame etc

5. It was quite a big site and think it was caravans and tents

6. May have had a pool but not really sure about this

I know this is not much to go by and believe me I have searched everywhere I can think of but cannot seem to find anything like it.

Does it ring any bells with anyone? Or if not, do you know of somewhere similar? Doesnt have to be on the river etc but nice site in that sort of area maybe.

Thank you in advance

Lisa x

It sounds a lovely site I hope you find out its name but it may have been redeveloped into a lodge or static caravan park, try searching for those.

I have a few ideas but dont tick all the boxes.

Boroughbridge c&cc site its on the river Ure with boats passing by, used to be privately owned, pub in the village of Roecliffe but not on the river. Canal in Boroughbridge with 2 pubs sort of canal side.

York - lots of river, boats and long boats, Rowntree park river side but not with a pub overlooking site.

Gargrave - Eshton road caravan site is on the Leeds - Liverpool canal, you can walk up the canal a bit and there is a big pub canal side.

Small caravan site on canal at Ripon, not sure of name but no pub on site.

Just cant think of anywhere else in the area you are looking.

Skipton has a lot of canal but dont know a site on canal side.

Are you sure this is the correct area.

Good luck in your search.

Thanks to Steve, Julie and TravelBug for your replies. I will take a closer look at the ones you have suggested.

Julie I only think it was this area because its the furthest my family travelled when I was younger. I can remember going to all sorts of campsites in these areas but never took much notice as I wasnt into camping at all and it was more me getting dragged along LOL.

You know when you can only recollect snippets of things... really confusing.  I really was sure it was York until I started looking into it and now it could be anywhere! Maybe I should just try and find a nice site in the area now instead of what was there years ago..off to look closely at your recommendations.

Thanks again Lisa x

Linton Lock site, Linton on Ouse north of York very similar to what you remember. Sometimes you get disappointed when you have memories of a place and then find it. Maybe try something new, although could try the sites mentioned by everyone

I don't think it will be riverside meadows. Theres alarge farmers field seperating the site from the river and its a very fast flowing shallow river, no boats on it at  all

The Pub in Roecliffe,

The Crown Inn, did have a campsite behind, and some static,s as well, the pub when I stayed was run by the Barlow Family, and a great character locally know as the Sheriff (aka Mick), who would come around and collect site fee's, was allways dressed in a large Hawian(sp) shirt and a stetson hat, and would ride around the site in his Daimler Double six, food at the Crown was good, and you could down to the river over a couple of field's, my son then around 12/13 yrs loved it there, his now 30 yrs of age only asked about the place last w/e, to take his two kids there but alas no longer running, but looking on google a very high class pub restaurant now.

Oh well happy memories, and happy days.

The Crown at Roecliffe is very different now, the Barkers havent owned it for years. I used to live in one of the cottages opposite. The site behind has lovely lodges on it now, all the statics have gone. I worked in the kitchen for a while and the food was great, it was a very busy place at the weekend. It now caters for the rich i would say, no cosy bar like it was, no tap room, just all restaurant. J x

Naburn Lock is close to York but doesn't have a pool.  It is right on the river and I think there used to be a pub but it isn't there now
