Haven is trialling the use of solar panels on its holiday homes, after a holiday home in Rockley Park Holiday Park, Poole was fitted with a solar PV array.
Haven partnered with caravan manufacturers, Willerby and Environmental Energies, to come up with the solar-powered caravan. The company will monitor the performance of the solar-powered caravan before deciding whether to roll them out at other locations across the UK.
Daniel Coward, a member of Haven's sustainability team, explained: "The benefits in terms of electrical production won't be huge – we are looking at a generation of around £200-£300 worth of electrical power per annum. But this could be enough to offset the consumption of the holiday home, and as accommodation accounts for 40% of the parks consumption, over time this initiative could make a real difference."
The design of the caravan is unobtrusive, with the solar panel only visible from one side of the caravan.
