It is a lovely part of the world BUT we did find it a bit limited for things to do with kids - much as we love walking, that's tricky with young kids (has to be a short walk and can't do one every day).

The area's quite hilly with no bike trails, so bike rides were out and there's little else around - no petting farms/activity/museum/attraction-type places...

Basically, it's Lyme Regis (lovely as it is) and some walks...there weren't even many country pubs, which we love going to (in fact, we only found one!). Even the campsite receptionists (not the Shrubbery) couldn't think of another...

I'm sure that's many people's idea of heaven but we were a little disappointed (and the kids bored).

Oh that's a shame nelmo. It is my son who begged us to go there because he wants to go fossil hunting so a few days will be spent doing this I think. My kids are 7 so a bit older and very accustomed to walking and spending most of the day wandering around outdoors so hopefully will be ok - if the weather holds up!!

Lyme is a very natural, old fashioned resort without much in the way of bright lights.   Weymouth is probably a good starting point for more activities (Sandworld, Sealife Centre etc) or perhaps Exeter (Crealy Park?). There is the Donkey Sanctuary on the Sidmouth Road as well which kids love.

There are loads of country pubs, the receptionist needs some retraining! Hunters Lodge on the A35 between Axminster and Lyme Regis(whilst not perhaps being a country pub in the true sense) does great food, is dog friendly and has a garden (with chickens!) - I'd recommend it there.   Plenty of pubs on the road to Sidmouth.   The Talbot Arms in Uplyme won't allow dogs though so avoid that.

I would second the Donkey Sanctuary if you're passing that way - entry is free of charge, and there is a restaurant on site.   Also, Crealy near Exeter as someone mentioned would fill a day and tire the kids out (about 40 minute drive)

Few more things that might be of interest if you like outdoorsy stuff (they may not fill a whole day though)

Seaton Tramway  (goes inland from Seaton to Colyton across the nature reserves)

Beer mackerel fishing  (small self driven boats can be hired by the half hour/hour - all equipment supplied)

Pecorama  (model railway if you have any train fanatics) - you can ride the mini steam trains through the tunnels and on a nice day have fab fews over Beer & Lyme Bay

Escot  (25 minute drive inland)  - country house/park estate set in over 200 acres.  Has a maze, falconry displays, woodland walks, restaurant, letterboxing (kids might enjoy that)

Bicton Botanical Gardens (25 minute drive)  has outdoor play area, maze, nature walks, woodland railway.

My kids(and me)love the fossil hunting.

I recommend you go on a guided fossil hunt, we went with Chris Pamplin and the knowledge he gave us has stayed with us ever since.

Thanks bozler - these walks look fantastic but are all booked up for half term week Will see if anything else similar is available when we get there!

Sounds wonderful, Karen - just what we are after.

Great campsite, very tidy.

Bovington tank museum isn't too far away.

If you are on the Shrubbery side of Lyme you can easily get to the car park down by the cob. If you turn right just after the car park on the right as you go down into Lyme you go down a steep narrow road, bare round to the right at the bottom and the car park is on the left. You have to pay but last time we were there you could get a weeks pass.
