Years ago I spent a few days camping at a site very near Hampton Loade, Shropshire, from the tent I could see a good stretch of the Severn Valley Railway, most enjoyable... I was wondering, does anyone know of any other
campsites near/with a good view of preserved lines?

Suggest picking your railway, then using the UKCS "map search" facility zoom in till you see the railway appear, locate sites near the line and phone them to find out what the view is like.
I appreciate for your replies, I usually get the post code for each railway and use the search on UKC, also I follow the OS map along the line on bing maps, the OS shows a lot of campsites but not all by any means. The internet is a great tool for this... but it doesn't know everything.
My post was aimed at members with real knowledge or experience of the above that may not appear in a general search.
Not sure the site will be your thing as very busy in school holidays. However kelling Heath in Norfolk has it own station on site with steam trains running regularly to sherringham and holt. You can buy discounted tickets at reception.
------------- 2015 sites booked so far: Cotswold Farm Park, Ninham IOW, still some more to book

The Great Central Railway Line (Quorn/Woodhouse station) is opposite the farm entrance and the train runs along the edge of the site. http://www.gcrailway.co.uk/
