We like to take our ten year old autistic son camping, but he tends to wake very early (4am onwards) and makes a LOT of noise sometimes - happy noise, but loud enough to wake anyone nearby!
We're going to Pembrokeshire in July, with both our sons, but for the first three days we'll have older son's best friend with us - they are both 12. So as well as the space, we also need some form of adventure for them - water, forest, campfires etc (not all - just one will do!)
SO - this elusive site needs to have a) space b) adventure potential for pre-teens and c) preferably be vaguely en route from Somerset to Pembs, but no more than about 1.5 hours from Somerset, so best friends parents can come and pick him up and the end of the three days and we can go on to Pembs.
I have searched and searched and come up with nothing. It's a very tall order I know. Would be so grateful if anyone has any ideas. Thanks.

Shell Island is in between Harlech and Barmouth in Wales - I know its not Pembrokeshire but could fit the bill. If you ring and explain your situation - speak to Richard or Carla - there is a field as you drive up that not many people camp on. Either way you have to be a fair distance from the next tent 20 metres if I remember correctly! and we put windbreaks round to make it private. There is direct access to a fantastic beach, rock pools, crabbing, you can fly a kite, fish, climb the sand dunes. There is a small boating lake and loads of space for ball games. You can have campfires either at your tent or on the beach. If you drive to the village and turn right fall the road and you come to Nanctol which is lovelt it has a stream and waterfall.
There is a supermarket, campshop, beach shop cafe and bar . Check it out on here. We go on a regular basis.
Hope you have a lovely hol where ever you go
You don't say when in July sphil but if it's NOT the week of the 21st to 25th (Royal Welsh Show) you might take a look at Fforest Fields. There are lots of quiet corners you can be tucked and although it's not 1.5hrs from Somerset it is about that from the Severn Bridge. All three requirements are on site, forest, water, campfires!
Not been but it seems to fit driving route, activities for kids. On the website Under camping it shows a site plan, it looks like just 10 camping spots, not sure about spacing though so you could phone and ask.
Also says pitch price is for 6 people, so that seems good as normally i get charged extra for kids

Thanks for messages. Shell Island sounds great but too far from our route to Pembs. Would love to try it another time though. Fforest Fields - it IS that week you mention, sadly! On this site it says Whitemead has 110 pitches - again it looks great, but too crowded for our younger son.
Sigh - am beginning to think the campsite we want doesn't exist.
Reviews are good and one review remarked how much space they have on pitches. A laid back site, only 20 pitches & has woodlands to explore and firepits. I would maybe email the site direct and ask your questions with regards to pitches - I'm sure they would help.
Looks as though the 20 pitches are over 2 fields but I would check with the owner to clarify. I've got that site on my favourites if we were passing that way but have never stayed there - it looks quite a basic, farm style site if you don't mind that sort of thing.
I'm sure this is too far for you for this trip, but I would recommend Foxholes Castle for a future trip, which sounds just what you want. Loads of open space, campfires etc.
Actually in Somerset, not sure if suits your travel plans but Alpine Grove at Chard would be perfect, especially if you ask for a woodland pitch. Sorry Ratty, can't do linky thing..

Loads of space, and the top Elderflower orchard takes tents and campervans, although the facilities are on the bottom pastures. It's a truly wonderful site.
