Hi everyone

Away to Watermouth Monday, only for a 5 day stay which, by the time we have pitched up will be 3.5 really as we will be leaving Friday morning.

Daughter no. 1's 7th birthday whilst we are there, too.

We are on a really tight budget for 3 Ad 2 Ch (both at the age where they pay to go/get into places).

I have seen-

Watermouth Castle (been when DD1 was only about 1-2 yrs old). I remember it being nice but some reviews have said it's not worth the entry for a full day? Bonus is that it's right on the doorstep.

The Big Sheep- really gutted I didn't think to get my last lot of Tesco Clubcard vouchers changed or that the lot I am due didn't come sooner as would have paid for almost all entry! Anyway, someone on another website said that this is more value for money. It's a fair drive but would be ok.

Milky Way- having looked at the website, it doesn't seem as there is much there? Or am I wrong?

Each of these will cost £50-£60 (if booked online- more on the door), for all of us and we don't plan to do all, maybe 1. Which would you say is best for a 4 and 7yr old? And us adults?

We are taking our slow cooker and 1 ring stove but never eat much in the tent and can't take much as we don't have a fridge or coolbox. I like to eat out on holiday, having said that, because of the budget and the fact there are 5 of us plus drinks, it will be more the cheap (but hopefully not nasty!) pub meals, fish n chips etc.

Are there any decent family pubs in the area or decent fish and chip shops within a few miles drive (at most)?

Any hidden gems locally?

We also *may* visit the Gnome Reserve on one of the days. I know this is a fair drive and having been there in 2007 I know it's not a full day out. What else is in the area of the Gnome Reserve to fill our day up?

Does anyone know what the beach on site is like? I understand it's a fair walk down. What are the nearest accessible beaches- are they walking/driving distance?

Pub on site- any opinions?

Really, as I said, one of the days is a theme park/attraction type thing as listed above. Another may be the Gnome place and something in that area but this is not for sure- depends how well our battered old Ford does on Petrol (probably not good!)

I know everything doesn't need to cost though, so any walks/geocache trails in the surrounding area would be good!

Other attractions I have seen are-

Ilfracombe Aquarium
Wildlife & Dinosaur Park
Wistpoundland (resevoir walk)
Exmoor Zoo ( again, been in 2007, forgotten everything about it)
Lynton & Barnstaple Railway
Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway
Discovery Island (shops)/ Atlantic Village?

Sorry for the super long post!

Look forward to replies, thanks in advance!

T x

Hi, we went to the Milky Way this year and found it was a full day out for us, 2 nine year olds and a six year old, we found a voucher to use in the local Devon tourist paper (forgotten what it is called but they are available everywhere) so cheaper to get in.  Kids really enjoyed it and what we liked most of all was you could take a picnic in, there are even indoor picnic areas if wet, nothing to pay for when you are in there, no pressure to buy this or that at every turn unlike Legoland.  Lots to do, even if wet but we went on a fine day.  Well worth the money.

We visited Combe Martin beach but found dogs running around and dog fouling on the beach (so you have to pick your spot), kids enjoyed rock pools and stream running into beach, parking is cheap and toilets accessible.

We also visited Woolacombe beach, very busy but clean and no dogs.  If you get there early morning, you can park for £3.00 if you leave before 1pm, after this it gets expensive.  Tide comes in and out a long way so choose your spot carefully.

We mostly cooked but did find a very nice but busy Chinese takeaway in Ilfracombe, Millenium House, food was excellent and portions large, in fact, it was soo good we went back twice in the same week so saved me cooking.

Ilfracombe itself, you can while away an afternoon just walking up the hill, around the town, tourist shops, buy a hocking's ice cream from the van (best local devon cream ice cream ever) and wander around the sea front, there is a small beach area as well.  Can't comment on the tunnels beaches as we have never been.

There is a lot to do in the area but most of it you will need to get into your car to do.

Have a good time.

Thank you so much for your reply, love a good chinese takeaway so will bear that in mind. Just to ask the kids which attraction they would prefer (I bet that answer is 'all of them')! x
