Hello all! First off, I'd like to say hello. I've lurked around for a while, getting to know all you secrets and garner your knowledge!!! (Creepy I know)!

We are quite new to camping. Having a 2 yr old has made it very difficult to partake in traditional family holidays and having spent time in tents as a youth, I managed to sell my wife on the virtues of camping.

The aforementioned ankle biter is VERY active and we are looking for sites that welcome kids. Do any of you have experience in this area? Which are the best sites and what, as parents, would you not be without?

Thanks,
TMW

Hello

We have a 6 & a 3 yr old and started camping when the 3 yr old was just over a year old.

We sometimes go to the bigger sites with play areas and things but more often that not, we find that anywhere with a big area for them to run around in is just as much fun. We also normally go for sites in areas where there is a lot to do so we're not on the site a lot during the day.

We take their pillow pet things that they have at home so they have something familiar, their favourite books, a couple of toys, football, bubbles and portable DVD player or iPad. Which may cause consternation in some parts, but it's horses for courses.

I know that a pingu double bill will keep my youngest happy if I require them to settle down. It's not on all the time, but it's there if you need it.

I also find that lots of fresh air tires out ankle biters very successfully

Hi TMW and welcome!

We've been camping for 10+ years and now have a little one to share our adventures with - nothing much has changed since her arrival, she's currently 21 months old but has been camping with us since she was 6 months - and loves it too!

The sort of site really depends on what you like to do and what you require from a holiday... do you want an all singing ,all dancing "holiday park" type site with pool, bar and entertainment or a quiet basic site with country walks, or somewhere in between? Lots of people with kids like the big parks with entertainment - but that's my idea of hell so can't help with that. We go for smaller, basic sites with maybe a small shop, playground and nice family shower facilites, if possible. Or maybe a farm site or near a beach, usually good options with kids! My little one is happy running about in a field or playing in a washing up bowl of water, so easy to entertain, but others aren't.

To be fair most sites, and indeed other campers, welcome well behaved, under control kids - unless they specify "adults only" - but facilites for kids do vary wildly. I guess with an active one you'd want a playground and space to run around as a minimum.

We recently stayed at Eskdale C&CC in the lakes; fab site, fairly basic although has top class facilites. Lovely family shower rooms (make it much easier to shower with a little one) and a little playground with huge trampoline, which was a huge hit with ours - and consequently us, as it tired her out!

Also been to Humble Bee farm, nr Filey. Again good family facilities and lovely for the kids as they can collect eggs from the hens and nice little playground. Also have a microwave and freezer which was useful.

The main issue is ensuring they are warm and dry, especially at night. Whatever sleep solution you chose, plenty of layers are key. And ensure under the bed is insulated as cold comes up through the ground.

If you want any more specific advice, shout up!

Wellies and waterproofs are a definate must do. If there are no family facilities or you have a little one that doesn't like the showers it is a good idea to take a big tub, then you can give them a wash in the tent, mine all thought this was great fun!

Was just going to suggest this.  Even something as simple as a tub trug or bucket comes in so handy!

Oh that brings back memories. I've got photos of us bathing our kids in one of the small tub trugs, every time we go camping now they ask if they can have a bath in the bucket. Except they're way too big for it now.

Might have to buy one of the huge ones!

I used one of those 'squashy' tub things you can get in all different colours, great for packing stuff in too!

As far as I am concerned camping is a traditional family holiday

Just go to any sites that take your fancy (obviously that are not adult only!), you don't necessarily need to have special 'child friendly' facilities for your little one to enjoy themselves, in my experience they are just happy to racket around and be out in the fresh air, and to be honest I found that bringing them up to expect simply that is a far healthier way of doing things, my lot make their own entertainment even now, because they adapted to wherever they were and found their own fun. A few toys/books/ colouring things/paper is good for any wet days when you don't plan to go out, and of course a familiar favourite cuddly toy is also a must.

Great tips from others re bathing, and the only thing I would add is that a waterproof jacket and trousers will definitely save on the laundry in wet weather!

Enjoy, wherever you decide to go, you have a lot of fun to look forward to

Jane.
