Hi TMW and welcome!
We've been camping for 10+ years and now have a little one to share our adventures with - nothing much has changed since her arrival, she's currently 21 months old but has been camping with us since she was 6 months - and loves it too!
The sort of site really depends on what you like to do and what you require from a holiday... do you want an all singing ,all dancing "holiday park" type site with pool, bar and entertainment or a quiet basic site with country walks, or somewhere in between? Lots of people with kids like the big parks with entertainment - but that's my idea of hell so can't help with that. We go for smaller, basic sites with maybe a small shop, playground and nice family shower facilites, if possible. Or maybe a farm site or near a beach, usually good options with kids! My little one is happy running about in a field or playing in a washing up bowl of water, so easy to entertain, but others aren't.
To be fair most sites, and indeed other campers, welcome well behaved, under control kids - unless they specify "adults only" - but facilites for kids do vary wildly. I guess with an active one you'd want a playground and space to run around as a minimum.
We recently stayed at Eskdale C&CC in the lakes; fab site, fairly basic although has top class facilites. Lovely family shower rooms (make it much easier to shower with a little one) and a little playground with huge trampoline, which was a huge hit with ours - and consequently us, as it tired her out!
Also been to Humble Bee farm, nr Filey. Again good family facilities and lovely for the kids as they can collect eggs from the hens and nice little playground. Also have a microwave and freezer which was useful.
The main issue is ensuring they are warm and dry, especially at night. Whatever sleep solution you chose, plenty of layers are key. And ensure under the bed is insulated as cold comes up through the ground.
If you want any more specific advice, shout up!

As far as I am concerned camping is a traditional family holiday
Just go to any sites that take your fancy (obviously that are not adult only!), you don't necessarily need to have special 'child friendly' facilities for your little one to enjoy themselves, in my experience they are just happy to racket around and be out in the fresh air, and to be honest I found that bringing them up to expect simply that is a far healthier way of doing things, my lot make their own entertainment even now, because they adapted to wherever they were and found their own fun. A few toys/books/ colouring things/paper is good for any wet days when you don't plan to go out, and of course a familiar favourite cuddly toy is also a must.
Great tips from others re bathing, and the only thing I would add is that a waterproof jacket and trousers will definitely save on the laundry in wet weather!
Enjoy, wherever you decide to go, you have a lot of fun to look forward to
Jane.
