Heading up here in September, up to Torridon, Applecross, Gairloch areas (maybe even further up north - depending on how distarcted we get... what with all them mountains...!

Anyway, ive seen the few campsites that are dotted around on here but wondering what its like for parking up and camping just off the road (we have a tent, but also a Renault Kangoo van that we have 'converted' to sleep in if necessary) preferably near a loch? Is this just a romantic ideal or is it do-able?

Can be much trickier than you'd think. You'll find the need to park on flat ground really quite an obstacle.

Popular routes will have 'no camping' signs up in juicy-looking flat grass verges as wild camping allowances don't really cover the side of public roads - always better to get out of sight. Which can be trickier than you'd think in a car/van as it is pretty rough terrain up there. People who stop in the laybys and passing places overnight can really inconvenience people, especially locals, so that's a big no-no.

You'll probably need to go beyond Gairloch to avoid the no camping signs at the side of the road. There are lots of good, basic, wild-campesque sites on your route which will make your life easier. Head to remoter places like the Western Isles and prime wild camp spots are endless.

You'll find it easier to find places on foot - though less convenient. And easier still (especially if you want a loch view) to get a canoe and paddle out to a campsite. Head to the coast to find flat beachy areas - but again, that'll be what lots of wild campers are doing.
