A couple friends and I are looking to go wild camping in the beginning of September in South East Scotland (Borders). We understand the rules associated with this type of camping however we are not overly familiar with the area. Can anyone suggest a few locations that might make good sites for this type of camping, we are only planning to do it over a long weekend and have no objections to moving from place to place, but we are looking for a bit of escapism so the more remote the better.

I never considered it to be a controversial topic?! I was recommended that these forums were a font of advice and info, didn't expect to be directed back to google. Oh well

Are you planning on backpacking or taking the car? If you're just in foot maybe the backpacking section of the forum might help better. I didn't know there was anything controversial about the subject either as its quite a legal thing to do up here (out with a few areas and with some common sense!) and something that's quite common to see in the hills.

Sorry can't help you with sites as its a bit more common in the north of Scotland rather than the south which has more of a chance of the hills actually being used for farming

It would be taking the car to travel up to Scotland (from Newcastle) and maybe factor in a short hike where necessary.

We are well aware of the rules regarding wild camping, my question was probably more about the local geography for a beautiful spot. I'm thinking I will just get a map of the area and simply pick somewhere tht looks a bit remote and jut head there. :-)

Lots of nice sites in the borders but as for wild parking look around Duns as there is some nice country around there that isn't farmland.

That's the issue with southern Scotland's countryside. If its not forestry commission it's farmland.

Plus note is there are no trespass laws.
But there is a strict criminal damage instead

I think the difficulty of this thread is the location Alan - in the years I've been on this forum I've not read much about the Borders area so i'm thinking people may not be as familiar with it. I think most people head North or D&G. Good luck and hopefully you'll get more replies.

Hi Alan..I agree with what most folks have said. The Borders are beautiful with rolling hills, farmland and forestry as has been said but in my own experience I preferred wild camping in more rugged areas of Scotland.

The Pentland Hills is just a bit further up, Perthshire, Lochaber, Central Scotland, Cairngorms etc etc are most popular IMHO.
Around Loch Lomond (possibly just the east side?)has been banned due to irresponsible idiots spoiling it for others.

Your idea of looking at a map is a good one, it can help to pre plan to some degree.
The best advice I can give is to arrive late and leave early, leave site as found which I am sure you would do anyway.
A fire can attract attention to your site.

Its been a few years since I seriously wild camped but give it a go and I am sure you will love it.
There is no doubt the further North you go the more dramatic the scenery.
Best of luck and enjoy..
