Hello, not been camping for years, used to go with a little tent so didn't bother us but now considering buying a family tent, but don't want one too big if we have to pay a lot more for a larger pitch, are pitches standard sizes on all sites? or do they vary from site to site, and how big are pitches? thanks

There is a lot of variation - the Camping and Caravanning Club Sites, for example, charge more for a "Jumbo" pitch (where available) for tents more than 5m wide and/or 9m deep, while commercial sites might charge for two pitches if they consider a tent too large for one.
The only way to find out is to contact the individual site!
Hi tonyh1972 We started out family camping in a family tent (Hi Gear Kalahari 8 + Porch - so not small!) and have not come across any problems with pitch sizes. We now have a Vango Maritsa 700, another beast, again not posing any problems for us. I usually check with sites before booking, giving tent measurements.
Apart from the tent size guideline for C&CC sites mentioned by Hacksaw Bob, Birchwood Tourist Park that is my favourite site, states in their price list that the maximum tent size in any pitch is 4.6m x 6.7m (this is normally interpreted as the tent footprint size excluding the guy lines).
These are the two dimensions I normally quote when replying to tent pitch size queries.
However, as already mentioned above, the only way to find out for certain what is considered as a "big" tent is to ring individual site to enquire.
