Hi everyone - we are due to go to Beechwood Grange, York shortly and wondered whether anyone could let us know whether there are any safe cycling routes nearby? I have looked on Google Earth and it looks as though the roads nearby are all dual carriageways but would welcome any advice from anyone who has been recently. We are keen to take our bikes and it seems as though, once you get into York, there are many opportunities to cycle - but it is getting there that is the problem!! Thanking you.

Hi
We went last year and have to say the route from Beechwood into York is a pretty busy one, not sure it would be much fun cycling, we caught the bus.
Pity you can't get in and Rowntree that does have a decent cycle route along the river.

Can't comment on the route from Beechwood, but there are lots of bikes in the centre of york, although a lot of it is pedestrianised, and narrow alleys, so the bus may be a better option.

I'm currently at Rowntree, and it is extremely convenenient for walking into York.

Jules

P.S. There are a lot of bus lanes around York (see other thread) which can (I think)  be  used by cyclists.

Thank you very much "Just do it" and Jules for your very helpful comments. Think that, on reflection, we will probably take the bikes (just in case) and investigate options when we get there. Sounds as though the bus service could be a good idea whilst "sussing out" the area. Thanks again for your help - and hope you enjoy your break at Rowntree, Jules.

I picked up a cycling leaflet while I was in York today, which linked to this website, lots of info on travelling round york, you can plan a cycle route on it and the park and rides have cycle storage as well as car parking.

Sustrans site may also be useful.

WOW! Thank you so much Jules - that is great. I have looked at it on the computer and will certainly try to get a copy when we get to York next week. It appears to be exactly what we are looking for and sincerely thank you for taking the trouble to post. Enjoy your break.

Thank you Rottietan. We are now at Beechwood and, unfortunately within 20 minutes of arriving on site, hubby had slipped over resulting in ambulance being called and the afternoon being spent in York hospital! Turned out to be a dislocated shoulder so no cycling during this stay. However we have had a walk as far as the bus stop and will hopefully return with bikes in the future. Wardens and fellow caravanners on site were absolutely brilliant throughout our "ordeal". Lovely site.
