A quiet site not too far from home for your first trip, preferably within easy reach of a camping shop in case you find that you have forgotten something.

Agree with the comment about choosing a site not too far from home for your first trip. There is a saying "if you can't see your front door you are on holiday".

Wouldn't necessarily choose a quiet site but definitely look for one with first class facilities, and by that I mean shower blocks and as you have EHU that becomes a necessity as well. You don't have to have an all singing and dancing site, but if the shower blocks are not top class it could be a disappointment.

Use the search engine on this site and find sites within 50 or so miles (or whatever distance you are comfortable with for a first trip) and check what facilities are on offer which fit the criteria you need. Then check out the reviews on the sites which you fancy. The people who put reviews on here are generally giving you their best opinions and are trying to be impartial and helpful to other campers. Its one of the pleasures of winter to use the dark nights to find the sites you fancy. As its your first trip don't be afraid to spend a bit more as with sites it is often a case of "you get what you pay for"

Good luck with the search. Its a good idea to use the virtual brochure facility on this site to build up a list of sites you fancy (saves you having to search all of them again every time).

I too would recommend a site not too far from home within a 20-30 miles radius.

This way, should you need to visit a camping/food/whatever shops for some bits and pieces mid trip, you already know where to go and do not have to waste time in trying to find/locate the shops.

If you intend to go further afield, I would strongly advise you to recce the camp site for the following:

Supermarkets (small ones as well as big ones with a pharmacy)
Petrol station
Camping equipment shop
Halfords and B&Q
etc...

I do this in advance for all my trips, and print the details off and carry a hard copy with me, just in case I do not have mobile phone signal or internet access, which is not uncommon for sites in remote areas such as those located near a forest.

Enjoy your first trip!

I agree that you'd be best no more than an hour from home, on a site with decent facilities, and within easy reach of a town with decent shops etc.

Having said all that, if your very own back lawn is big enough...!!

(Ignore the fact that the neighbours will be pointing and laughing.... they'll soon get jealous! )

If you don't fancy the garden idea, you'd be hard pressed to find a better site/facilities than Beech Croft Farm which I guess is about an hour away from you?

10min drive to Buxton, 20 mins to Bakewell. Monsall Trail on the doorstep. First class staff/management on hand. Small site shop for essentials. Views to die for. Pay as you go leccy (a lot cheaper that way!!) And shower facilities that truly can be described as 5*.

Give it serious consideration. If you have confidence in the site, it will make your first trip so much more relaxing and enjoyable. There's enough to think about/remember as it is!!

Good luck.... and let us know how you get on!

My neighbour goes to beech croft & loves it there, that's on our 'to do' camping list this year.

I agree with others go close-ish to home, put your tent up at home too so your used to it. Sorry if it sounds obvious, we early forgot to do it haha. We went to a site in anderby creek on east coast (2 hour drive from Nottm) lovely little site, when we went on our 1st trip.

Good luck, hope you have a ball.

Ooh, very jealous, as a seasoned camper, I remember the excitement of our first trip, with borrowed equipment, just to see if we liked it. We did !!!!! Enjoy.

For our first trip we went to Tattershall Lakes near Sleaford. Easy to get to, plenty for the kids to do, bar and an indoor pool and gym. Some good offers for April.
