I've never been to crystal palace but abbey wood was fine when we stayed. Good perimeter fence and gate. CCTV, etc. not in the nicest of areas but bery short walk to the train station. I felt safe (female) walking to and from the station with my daughter in daylight. Not sure I'd have been as happy after dark?? Not on my own anyway. Saying that its residential streets you're walking through so I guess its as safe as anywhere in London.
we stay at c.club site wyats covert in denham, it is just of the last junc of the m40, so you dont have to drive in the heavy london traffic. you can get the train at denham station to marlybone with a ticket you can use on bus and u.ground, takes about 20 mins.

staying at crystal palace for a week from tomorrow, thought we were all ready but theaa site says use the M1 and the cc site says use the A1. Has anyone been from 'up north', and which way did you go? First time in London for 25 years and first time with a caravan, thanks for reading
The A1 is a much pleasanter road to drive down. Presumably that then takes you in from the East which is probably an easier approach than from the West. The first time I went I came in from the East and out through the west and the eastern way is better.
------------- Bill
For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
There is also a campsite in Debden, Loughton, which is on the East London/Essex borders. There is a central line station only a few mins drive from the campsite and it's approx. 40mins on the train into central London.

Thanks for the advice guys, normally use M1 but as you said A1 is a more pleasant drive. Stayed at Crystal Palace, nice site and drove into London, 30 mins to Earls Court
