Hendra is worth every penny, they work very very hard for their 5 stars couldn't recommend them more. But their high season goes from May to Sept so no discounts for term time camping, but unlike other sites they have full entertainment and all facilities running through this period, so although Cornwall is less busy in general it is all going on here as it would be mid August hence the prices.

We are looking at Cornwall for next year. We have a free ferry but the sites are way more expensive than comparable French sites.

I think there may be a few ACSI and Camping Cheque sites there? we use CLs/CSs as usual, but don't go in school holiday times. Anne

Fair point but lets not forget we are camping here, was this not a pastime created for folk to enjoy a cheap holiday, and lets face it many of the Cornish sites ain't cheap. I don't care if the Queen is in attendance dancing the fandango some of the prices are horrific and the amount of families around the country that end up in a field with a few cows for company because of these high prices becoming more and more common. A camping holiday to Cornwall/Devon for many around the UK that have to travel a fair distance down there is almost as out of the question as a foreign holiday is. When you all start spouting off about how good value it is, it might be worth stepping back and looking at your own financial situation and think to yourself how fortunate you actually are.
There are plenty up north that seem to have lost the plot too when it comes to pricing. Yet again, another aspect of British culture raped by the greedy British mindset.
We work hard for every penny of our income thanks and created our own fortune if that's what you want to call saving and going to the places we enjoy. Be careful getting off your soap box it's a long way down!

We went to watergate bay last year. It is a good well kept kept site, as I said though the area with the super pitches (where we were) was more crowded than other areas. The pool is excellent, the refurbished bar was good (but dogs not allowed :-( so we didn't go in there much so can't say what the entertainment was like, but there was something going on most nights). The dog exercise area is a great big space for off lead runs. If your kids like scooters/skateboards then they'll love the skate park, it took just 1 day for my son to look like he'd been run over! Don't forget body boards/surf boards and wetsuits too! You Can walk to the beach and also join the sw coastal path just off the site. The beach just up the road mawgan porth is good too so give that a try as well as watergate bay. Both beaches are dog friendly. Also, the airplanes coming into the airport are nothing to worry about - one day the whole red arrows flew in out of the airport over the site! I think you will enjoy it, we did. We also prefer sites that are tourers/tents site only. We arrived just after the heat wave, but the weather was ok. We have decided to go further down to st Ives this year and going to Polmanter, yes this is more expensive than we paid at watergate bay, I guess we'll have to see if it's worth it - it seems popular despite its price. We were thinking of France, but the ferry costs (longer crossings), kids new passports, kennel costs or dog passport costs and additional time/cost getting there, especially to get far enough down that the weather has significant increased reliability of sunny compared with Southern England put us off.

Some of our friends go to the south of France and even Spain almost every year. I am struggling to see the fun in towing the caravan all that way and would prefer to go on a plane holiday if looking to travel that far. Each to their own though, our friends love it.

Yes it is a bit of hike. Done in it the car for set up tents and a gite before and love France, but towing would take so long, it's quite enough for the kids and dog to get to the Cornwall from Yorkshire and that's with an overnighter near Bristol, aside from the cost.
