Hi

We are in the process of planning a highland trip, we are hoping to break up the journey buy stopping off in the lakes, we are then looking to slowing move on up to the tip of Scotland.

It’s for my husband and myself, but the thing is we prefer small sites so something like a CL/CS, but these seem fairly limited, ideally with hook up as we plan on being away a fair while.

Specifically at the moment we are stuck mid way thou we are looking for a site base for a week maybe and we were wondering about maybe staying around in Killin? As we would like to visit the Falkirk Wheel and many other places on the way up. The obvious area is also Loch Lomond but we would be going in prime time and we don’t want to battle crowding, any recommendations or advise?

The Caravan Club have two sites in Killin ... the Clachan is the smaller of the two sites. It is not a CL but doesn't have a loo block so has a similar feel ... it does have electric hook ups and hard standings.

Falkirk wheel will be around an hour or so away.

NB Don't do what many tourists do and forget the east coast of Scotland ... to me it has more charm than the west coast.

Thanks we are veering west east west at the moment,

It doesn't need to be killin, we are just looking for somewhere where we can visit the wheel from.

Killin is a good base for seeing the wheel ... it depends what else you want to see I guess.

We like Balbirnie Park CC site in Fife ... again not a CL, but not a huge site either. From there you could vist the wheel, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee etc etc

The Killin / Clachan sites are a bit out in the sticks, and you'll have to travel a bit for basics.

Specifically for the Falkirk wheel, The CC Woods site at Stirling is better placed, but it maybe larger than what you want. I would also recommend Linwater, E. Calder just outside Edinburgh, as a good base for the city, the Wheel and Fife.

The Falkirk wheel is a great engineering masterpiece, but when I visited, there was no visitor centre. I don't think it was ever envisaged as a tourist site. So, the only way to get a good view etc was to take a boat trip - and this was expensive!
I agree with IainM's view that too many people ignore the East (and Borders) and miss some of the best parts of Scotland.

Then again - it leaves the best parts for the locals!

We live about 40 miles as the crow flies, from Killin.

Now although it is a popular area for those that want to go and spend their entire holidays there, it is not the sort of area where those that want to tour about would choose.
Everything of any worth, worth seeing is at least one hour's drive from Killin and the road along Loch Tay has to be driven with care, being especially careful of Logging Lorries.

Although a lover (and resident) of the West Coast, I think you should take heed of what others are saying and look at the East Coast, Stirling and the Edinburgh sites.

You really can't beat the UKCS map search facility, tick on the CL/CS box. You don't say when you're coming, but if it's during Commonwealth Games, you may struggle to get a site within an hour's drive of Glasgow. Everyone has their favourite parts of Scotland - mine's Dumfries & Galloway, but most folk miss out the SW. Different people prefer different landscapes and you may or may not like the same scenery. My advice, based on 30 years camping up here, is - follow that hole in the sky with the sun shining through. We've made many a "left or right at this junction?" decision based on seeing where the sun is shining, and have always enjoyed the results. And don't underestimate how long it will take to get from A to B. Some atlases change scale for Scotland - if you fold UK in half, the bend is at Selkirk.

Don't know how long it is since you were at the Falkirk Wheel Capt but it is at least 5 years since we were there and there is a beautiful visitor centre and cafe where you can sit and watch the wheel in action. If you are a CC member there is a nice CL at Denny not far from Falkirk called Carr's Hill. We haven't visited it but friends have and recommended it. Someone mentioned the Commonwealth Games , the Ryder Cup is also coming to Gleneagles this year and I believe sites are already well booked up for it .Plenty other areas to choose from and you won't do the whole of Scotland justice in 2-3 weeks far too much to see and do !

It's been 4 or 5 years since I was there, but I would hardly describe the facilities as a 'Visitor Centre'. Certainly there was a cafe and a shop, but little in the way of displays, engineering models etc....

The best way to get any real info was to take a boat trip on the wheel, and that was quite expensive.

Of course, things might have changed a lot in those 4 or 5 years, but I felt that at the time, the visitor centre was a real let-down.

However I will agree with you that with the Commonwealth games, Ryder cup, Edinburh festival etc... Things may be pretty busy this summer. As you say, there's plenty to do and see from the Royal residences to the "secret" underground neuclear bunker near Crail.

If you Google Falkirk Wheel Visitor Centre, it does state that there are interactive displays etc there.
