The Killin / Clachan sites are a bit out in the sticks, and you'll have to travel a bit for basics.
Specifically for the Falkirk wheel, The CC Woods site at Stirling is better placed, but it maybe larger than what you want. I would also recommend Linwater, E. Calder just outside Edinburgh, as a good base for the city, the Wheel and Fife.
The Falkirk wheel is a great engineering masterpiece, but when I visited, there was no visitor centre. I don't think it was ever envisaged as a tourist site. So, the only way to get a good view etc was to take a boat trip - and this was expensive!
I agree with IainM's view that too many people ignore the East (and Borders) and miss some of the best parts of Scotland.
Then again - it leaves the best parts for the locals!
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.

Don't know how long it is since you were at the Falkirk Wheel Capt but it is at least 5 years since we were there and there is a beautiful visitor centre and cafe where you can sit and watch the wheel in action. If you are a CC member there is a nice CL at Denny not far from Falkirk called Carr's Hill. We haven't visited it but friends have and recommended it. Someone mentioned the Commonwealth Games , the Ryder Cup is also coming to Gleneagles this year and I believe sites are already well booked up for it .Plenty other areas to choose from and you won't do the whole of Scotland justice in 2-3 weeks far too much to see and do !

It's been 4 or 5 years since I was there, but I would hardly describe the facilities as a 'Visitor Centre'. Certainly there was a cafe and a shop, but little in the way of displays, engineering models etc....
The best way to get any real info was to take a boat trip on the wheel, and that was quite expensive.
Of course, things might have changed a lot in those 4 or 5 years, but I felt that at the time, the visitor centre was a real let-down.
However I will agree with you that with the Commonwealth games, Ryder cup, Edinburh festival etc... Things may be pretty busy this summer. As you say, there's plenty to do and see from the Royal residences to the "secret" underground neuclear bunker near Crail.
