If you push, you can get up to South Scotland in a onner - we got from Cotswolds to Ayrshire in 8 hours, or was it 10. So you could have your first night (or two) at C&CC site at Moffat - worse places to start a tour. And I think the logic then, as you're already on the west side, is up the west coast and down the east coast or down the centre. Bypassing Dumfries & Galloway, as suggested, leaves it quieter for the rest of us! We have done Ullapool to Ayrshire in one day including lunch at Loch Morlich, Aviemore. But pottering is best - stop longer where you like the scenery, and when you come to a junction, follow the sun and head in the opposite direction to the clouds. In May, you should avoid the worst of the midges.
South Somerset to Moffat is doable but hard work at nigh on 400miles. It depends if time is an issue. Doing the just short of 300 miles to kendal gets rid of all the boring stuff and is far enough to be reasonablly easy. Then allowing your holiday to start and taking time to travel and admire the views as you move ever further North by doing an average of just over a hundred mikes a day makes for relaxing holidays.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013
