Looking for ideal site, preferably with hard standing because we're motor homers, to be close to sheep and lambs. Would love to pitch somewhere where we could access footpaths through limestone landscapes then get back to van in time to see the tea-time ganging-up of the lambs ready for their evening gambol on our doorstep. Will be in Derbyshire mid April, so should be plenty of scope for suggestions, and we live in west Cornwall, so any suggestions along the A30/M5 could be helpful. A Pub with local cask ales nearby is probably asking too much!

Theres plenty of Lambs about on the Chatsworth house estate at the moment, and a Caravan Club site of the same name within the same area.

The High Peak trail is a disused railway track that winds for several miles through the Derbyshire landscape and takes in plenty of countryside scenes along the way, including the dry stone walls, sheep and cattle, pretty villages, and a scattering of visitor centres selling refreshments, bike hire, and various maps and trinkets. They are also a wealth of local knowledge and mainly staffed by people who have lived in the area for many years.

Try looking at one of the sites around Carsington water, The C&CC have their Ashbourne site with hardstandings, Caravan club have the Carsington water site, theres a small basic site adjacent to the Knockerdown pub, which do have a few real ales on tap, or try the Lion at Turnditch, again they have several real ales and guest beers to try.

All the above are within easy reach of the High Peak Trail, Matlock Bath, and Chatsworth House with its fine (but rather expensive) farmshop for its tasty treats, meat and game from the estate, and a selection of locally brewed and bottled ales.

Thanks for your replies. We have stayed at Chatsworth in the past and, yes, there are a lot of sheep in the park and it is indeed a glorious place, but I'm hoping for more 'up close and personal'. Have to say their farm shop is not to be missed; it is expensive but the quality of their homemade products justifies the price.

We've also camped twice at Cotswold Farm Park, which I would highly recommend and their farm shop sausages are excellent.

We are going to re-visit Ilam Park where, like Chatsworth, there are plenty of sheep on the park, but I've discovered a few sites around Biggin, Hulme End, Hartington and one near Taddington which look quite promising for closer proximity to tea-time 'gambolling'. However it will be weather-dependant because most pitches are on grass.

If we find a 'gem' I'll post a review - 'tho maybe not if there's limited space!

Thanks Beech Croft, you were one of the sites on my potential list so you may well get a visit from us! Are the lambs likely to be close-by the pitches?

Hi angelawalklett... The lambs are not on site but the barn close by is housing all of the expectant mothers :)
Depending on the dates you would visit us in April, you may be able to see a lamb being born. When they are a few days old and stronger we then turn them out just up the road in one of the fields. (They are coming slow and steady at the moment)
The Monsal Trail runs down behind us too,as well as lots of other walks in the area. :)

Hello Beech Croft.... Hope to stay with you for a couple of nights during first week of May but won't be able to make advanced booking so keeping fingers crossed that you're not too busy that week. Suspect all lambs wil have been delivered by then but your offer to be present at a birth is firmly lodged in my memory bank for another time! Looking forward to meeting you..
