Hi. I am looking for a campsite with direct beach access in Dorset. Searched on the listings here, and there seems to be a lot of holiday parks. I am looking for something smaller ( with preferably a little play area for children). I also want to go in whit week. There seems to be a lot that only open in July/august. Any ideas? Thanks.

Seadown in Charmouth. We didn't like the people there personally but others review it well.

The problem with Dorset is that the nice sandy beaches which are safe for kids, such as Bournemouth, Swanage and Weymouth don't seem to have campsites within a couple of miles but there are campsites where the beach is pebbly, shelve quickly and perhaps not too safe for kids. One site is Golden Cap at Seatown (as opposed to Seadown which is a bit further along).

Golden cap is noted also for being the highest cliff in England.

I've been to Golden Cap and its a lovely site.
It's walking distance to a nice, but pebbly beach, a village with pub, a beachside pub, a children's play area and coastal walks.
It's not one of those big commercial sites with clubhouse etc.

We've just come back from Seadown (I wanted to go to Golden Cap but the pub's shut) and it was very nice and I thought the people were fine.

It is small, and quiet (no clubhouse or anything) and about 2 mins to the beach. I don't think it would be safe for small children, but older ones will enjoy the fossil hunting (you can hire hammers from the fossil centre on the beach).

There's no playground as such but there is a grassy area for kite flying etc

Fish and chip van vistis on Friday and Sunday night - delicious. The Royal Oak in Charmouth does excellent food and there are other pubs and restaurants too.

Some of the reviews say the pitches are small - that wasn't our experience.

It's called Durdle Door Campsite (or caravan park) and is a very nice site. The mass of caravans in the photo are statics but in front of those on the cliff top are pitches for caravans and motorhomes. Between the two rows of trees are a mixture of tents and caravans. One very slight problem with this site is that a public footpath runs right through the middle past all the tents so keep belongings safe. I don't know if they ever have any problems in that respect.

There is Sea Barn farm which has access to a 'beach' but not as you know it... It is on / right beside Chesil Beach (remember those Geography lessons at school and it will ring a bell) but it is more one to walk along - just a few feet of beach and birds and what not...

When we took the children to the beach we went to Weymouth beach - but you do need to car for this.

The reason I'm suggesting this is my 1.5, 5 & 7 Year olds loved it last year. No clubhouse and only tents and camper vans. Loooovely shower block - wave at the showers to make them work. We drove to Weymouth and parked (in town - paying) or in residential street -(free). Did lots of crabbing in the harbour (they weirdly preferred this to the beach)

Do see my review...
