Sorry as I may have put this post in the wrong section.
Hi newbie here, we are thinking of touring up to Durness, Scotland and back down other side. My question is could we just turn up at a site or is it best to book in advance. We would be looking to stop for 2/3 nights each time.

That is one really long trip. I once worked in Eribol, between Tongue and Durness, and it took my 2 days, and one overnight stopover, driving to get up there, and that was only in the car. Single track roads with passing places, but worth it for the stunning scenery. Which direction do you intend taking, and at what time of the year.
We did that trip in a car, but stayed in B&B's so can't help with sites. It is a long journey. We went up the west coast, across Arran and Skye, up to the west corner, across the top, over to Orkney where we did camp for 3 nights. Coming back, we had to speed up a bit and stayed in Inverness and Edinburgh. We went on 11 ferries, had a great time.
Hi Welshwyn, we was thinking of going up to Inverness then seeing what comes after that, I have relatives in Scotland so can break the trip up. We are retired so time factor no problem, except for midge season. Doing iy in a car with tent attached.

Then from Inverness you'd go travel to Lairg and then the last 50 mls of road to Tongue is single track road with passing places over beautiful and rugged moorland. But don't forget in Scotland you can also go wild camping.
mancha, you might find link below on Scottish Outdoor Access code useful

There's other links via VisitScotland and Walk Scotland including deerstalking season links. Loch Lomond area is restricted in places.

we are planning a similar trip next month. We are planning on an overnight in Lockerbie, then For Augustus, then over too Poolewe, then up to Thurso, then down to Avimore, then stirling and back home. The only one nighter is the stop in Lockerbie .. and that is more for our doggies benefit.
So looking forward to the adventure, we have been to Sctoland loads of times and explored the west coast as far up as Skye, but always in hotels and self catering accommodation, we are new to Caravanning.
Hope you enjoy your trip too

Wow Ann ! Lockerbie to Fort Augustus in one go is a bit much. Budget for 40 mph - but you've been before, so you know our roads are slower. If you can't get into Poolewe (it's a popular site), there's an acceptable & much cheaper alternative (for a short while) at Gruinard Bay. If you have a caravan, don't even think about taking the single track road from Ullapool up to Lochinver - it's hard enough in a wee motorhome. When you say Stirling, Witches Craig is near there and a superb site.
Mancha - Wild camping in Scotland - a tent is covered by the access legislation, but motorised transport is not. But you should be fine if there are no signs saying "no overnight camping". You can't wild camp on Forestry Commission land, some Councils have gantries that stop access to some car parks.
