Boroughbridge C&CC site, just minutes off the A1 and near a nice market town and good local pub in village, a nice quiet site. CL at Aiskew near Bedale, cant think of the name but we are staying there is 2 weeks time.
Spen house at Minskip near boroughbridge, C&CC CS. again 3 mins off the motorway, all these are probably about 3 hours from the midlands depending on where you are going, you could put your details into RAC routemaster and see. If you want to stay an extra night its a lovely area for visiting Harrogate, Knaresborough, Fountains Abbey, Newby hall and of course York, they are all within 20- 40 mins drive for a day out. J x

I have to say, I'm finding the price if some sites to be way more than what I'd have expected.
One site up in Whitby is coming out at nearly £200 for a 4 night stay! I think that is quite extortionate for what the site has to offer, that's not even mid season either.
I can stay a week in Cornwall on an EHU pitch for less than £200 before peak season.

The OP wanted to know about sites near the A1, so don't understand why Whitby? We are staying at Stonebridge Fishing Lakes which is just off the A1 near Northallerton for 2 nights next week, no idea what it's like as haven't been but it looks ok. £10 or £11 per night, can't remember.

Have a look at the CC Racecourse sites around Thirsk, not as cheap as a CL, but good basic sites just a couple of miles off the A1 with plenty of space for walks around the tracks, and near to Thirsk with all its attractions, pubs, restaurants and shops.
