Hi Ya
I have a son who is just train crazy .... 24hrs a day his life revolves around trains.
Does anyone know of any Campsites that back onto the railway line ? ?
I know of Swanage and the West Highland railway but was wondering if anyone knows of any that back onto a main line instead of a preserved railway ? ?

I know you said main line but have a look at Snowdonia Park. It has a station and bridge over the line to get to the toilet block.
My train crazy son used to love it

Station Camp site Carrog. It is next to Carrog Station Llangollen Steam Railway.
Currently the Line terminates at Carrog, but they are working to extend it to Corwen.
We stayed beginning of May. And had a Eight Year Old who is Autistic but Steam Train Mad with us. by asking the Crew of the Last train back to Llangollen, on the Sunday.
We got him on to the Foot Plate, along with several other in the group. His face, was something I will never forget.

Troon St Meddans - mixed reviews, but I see the site from the train right by the tracks. He'd get passenger trains every 15 mins, some long coal wagons, maybe aviation fuel for Prestwick Airport and the odd steam train is there's an outing with the Preservation Society. Moreton C&CC (Dorset?) has noisy trains, I recall - the Wardens could tell you if they're visible from the other side of the site. And Dingwall C&CC has trains, though not many - and it's a long way from Hampshire! You hear trains from sites up the A9 from Perth to Inverness, and also along the coast to Dundee and up to Aberdeen, but you'd need to zoom in on the UKCS map to see how close they were to the site and then phone to check (e.g. 2 sites at Monifieth - but I recall that views tend to be south to the sea). You could "follow the tracks" from your home on the UKCS zoomable map and see what sites appear to be beside the line...

normans bay site as a good view of passing trains, all southern passenger trains no goods trains. A pitch at the far side enabled our children to sit and watch from caravan window and as trains are electric its not too noisey. Normans bay station is half a mile walk to get train into Eastbourne quite cheaply approx. 5 mile ride. also beach is across the road and from the train you can see your caravan kids loved it.

The camping magazine must've read your request as page 50 is an article about campsites beside railways!
They name: Ravenglass Camping & Caravan park, Knight Stainforth Hall Caravan & Camping park, Black Bull Camping & Caravan Park & Prospect Farm Camping & caravan Site. Lots of info on these sites in the article.

Red Bank Farm at Bolton le Sands almost backs onto the west coast main line, you can see the trains from the site. For a closer look, walk or drive to Hest Bank station (now disused), there's a crossing there with a footbridge, free parking on the shore and a nice cafe. You could trainspot there all day.
