We haven't been camping as a family for a number of years, but I thought it might be fun to take my kids (in their twenties), boyfriends and my young nephew (13) somewhere in the summer. Would ideally like somewhere close to a small town or village so that people can be independent. A pub close by would be great. And a campsite that isn't too sterile, by which I suppose I mean I'm not that keen on caravan parks. We would have to go in the summer hols.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Whitwell Station just outside Reepham is very nice although you would need your own facilities and there is no hookup, but there is a bar on site and Reepham is a small market town that is within easy walking distance (just under a mile), with a few shops cafe's pub etc.

If you are tenting, Wells on the north Norfolk coast has Pinewoods campsite which usually during the peak season uses the land beside the main site as a very informal tent site and is very central for beach and town. Also, if you are a member of the CCC, they have 2 temp holiday sites in Wells which are informal and cheap. I know the one on the Alderman Peel school playing field normally has use of the school toilets and showers but are quite limited and you would really need your own facilities as well. Neither that area of Pinewoods or the THS would have hook-ups
Wells has numerous pubs etc and a good Coast Hopper bus service for travel right along the North Norfolk coast.

Thanks for both responses. Will definitely check them out. We really are novice campers, so when you say we'd need our own 'facilities' I presume you're talking about cooking equipment?

No, you would need your own toilet facilities ie Porta Potti and perhaps a toilet tent. The Alderman Peel school usually has toilets and showers so you could get away with it. It does not say in the mag wether they are available this year (26th July to 23rd Aug) but you could ring 07952290151 for more details on price and toilets if you are interested. You would have to join the Camping and Caravanning club but the cost of that would be outweighed by camping costs at that time if year. Pinewoods would have toilets and showers. Not used Pinewoods but it guess the overspill tent site could get muddy if it was very wet.

how many tents will there be? is cost a big factor in choice? is everyone going to have their own car for if they want to venture away from the group?

I have been talking to our local campsite manager and they hire half the field out for rallies with no electric for £60 a night! (officially 15 pitches however room for more - would expect half the field to accommodate 10 pitches but would have to ask) Electric is limited availability and costs an additional £4 a night but is 16A.

Toilets & shower are of the festival kind but weren't unpleasant (the company they use are based on site and they get changed quite regular from what she said), the washing up sink is just a sink with a hose so no hot water but short walk from the shower which you could use for the hot water. There is a wooden childrens play area in the middle of the field that is only a few years old. They also have a basic caravan for rent (normally used by contractors) but didn't go into detail on that and pre pitched tents were mentioned.

There is a lockable gate which is kept closed at all times which makes the site feel safe, there is a key which can be obtained for a £10 deposit - not sure if they lock it every night or just when someone requests a key.

Location is relatively rural but only 1 mile from a village (not safe to walk) with a small shop & pub, 3 miles from a small market town or 10-15 miles for a larger town.

Try Links Caravan & Camping site at Mundesley in Norfolk. It's just outside the village (3 pubs and 1 club) and has a really nice flat tent field with hookups.

Thanks for all that. There will probably be eight or ten of us. Mostly without cars. To be honest, the way things are working out I suspect we might only manage a long weekend so I'm sure could put up with less than perfect conditions. Will check out the suggestions.
