Well, the recommended site(s) at Loch Ken will give you loch paddling (and Red Kites). As for river paddling, the Solway tides are like the Morecambe Bay ones (the water doesn't come in over the sand, it comes up out of the sand at your feet), so the tidal stretches of the rivers vary greatly in height - squelchy mud at low tide, enough depth for a gaff-rigged oyster smack to sail up the river to Palnackie at high tide. And I've seen canoeists going past Threave Castle (by Castle Douglas). However neither of these rivers have sites with direct access to them - just nearby (Dalbeattie or Barlochan, and Castle Douglas). So it sounds like Loch Ken to me...
