Hi everyone...we're massively excited about this but would like some hints and tips from you lovely lot if possible

We are planning to tour around Scotland with our caravan. We are relative newbies to caravanning and have only been out a handful of times on a few weekends.
We hope to start our tour around the Loch Lomond area of Scotland and move from site to site every 3-5 days. We need to find about 4-5 campsites and this is where you come in. Has anyone got any good recommendations of sites that we could consider. We are a family of 5 (2 adults, 2 children aged 14 and 11 and 1 dog). We aren't too bothered about the sites with pubs and children's clubs as we much prefer nature's own playground. We do like nice, clean facilities though and friendly places (pet and children). So, what does everybody think? Any good recommendations? Anything that we should watch out for? Anything else???

Thanks in advance for all your help - my notepad and pen are at the ready

Luss is a good site, on the shores of Loch Lomond. We travelled on from there to Oban, where we stayed on the site just to the north, North Ledaig, a wonderful site looking out over the loch towards Mull and other islands. Facilities are first class and this site is highly recommended, but gets quite full so would advise booking in advance.

I stayed at Luss C & CC site last year, right at the side of Loch Lomond - my pitch was only about ten yards from the water. A very nice site with fab views across the loch, and Luss village itself is very pretty - you can do boat trips from there, either around the various islands or across the loch to Balmaha. The only downside to the site for some people may be road noise as the A82 runs right past it, but tbh even in a tent I managed to shut my ears to it so if you're in a caravan you may hardly notice it.

If you manage to get as far as the Highlands coast then I can recommend the Arisaig area - gorgeous beaches and fab scenery. I stayed at Invercaimbe camp site, the end of the site comes right onto the beach and the views are to die for - if you like nature's own playground then you'll definitely find it there. The facilities are basic but are always very clean, and the beaches are great for kids and dogs.

Since to some Scotland seems only to have a West coast, if you want a bit of real nature, walking and getting eaten alive in summer, then I'd suggest Morvich or the area round Torridon, Kinlochewe, Poolewe etc...

If you want a more genteel holiday, the locals will tell you that the East coast is drier, has few midgies, uncrowded beaches etc.. I suggest that you try Royal Deeside (good cycling on the Deeside way) or Speyside (dozens of distilleries to visit and great walking)

Thank you everyone...I'm going to start having a look at the sites mentioned.

Keep the ideas coming please

I'm also interested in going up to Pitlochry area too - been there before (not in a caravan) and it's stunning!

Thanks again x

Have a look at Lomond Woods site at Balloch,
pitches in walled garden are best.
walking distance to south of loch
and a small shopping center called Lomond Shores,
there was a continental market there when we visited. Balloch country park a short drive as are shops.

I would second that we did a bit of exploring the East Coast a few years ago and loved it much quieter.

If going up the West the midges are mad just now. Make sure you have repellent. Glencoe C&C is nice then Oban you could pop over to Skye. If it was me I would go up the East. No midges, or fewer Loch Morlich is beautiful near Aviemore. There is a new C&C site at Loch Ness. You can go up to Nairn, Rosemarkie or Dingwall. Rosemarkie is right on the Moray firth dolphins guaranteed!

A good chance to see dolphins along much of the Moray and North Aberdeenshire coast. If you're lucky, also Minkie whale and maybe even Orca.

I'm just back from a few days at Silverbank CC site in Banchory on Royal Deeside. Great walking beside river with Crathes Castle & gardens and small restored railway both an easy walk from site.

If the kids want adventure, there is a "Go Ape" centre in the castle grounds.
