Fife is a lovely area and has lots of young children to do. Staying somewhere near St Andrews gives you access to Edinburgh, Dundee and Perthshire, whilst enjoying all the beaches and harbour towns.
Despite being from Aberdeen I have never camped in Scotland so no use with sites.
Alternatively the tip of Scotland around Oban is beautiful and so much scenery.
Skye is also worth the trek.
We had a week at Loch Ken holiday park in Dumfries and Galloway last year. Its right on the shore of loch ken and our two boys (then 4 and 2) loved it.
There is plenty to do around the area to keep them entertained too, and all within a short drive.
Depends what you are looking for ie coast or highland hol? If coast then Moray/Buchan coast is a lovely area with some great beaches. But like most of northern Scotland its a bit on the cool side and would take about 6-7 hours to get there.
Fife/St Andrews area is a good suggestion - only about 3-4 hours drive. There is an aquarium at North Queensferry, Safari park at Blair Drummond (nr Stirling) - both of which aren't too far if you are in Fife. Craigtoun Park (childrens play park) nr St Andrews is okay.

I'm in N.Aberdeenshire which is probably a bit more than you would like to travel. Pity because there are some great beaches here which are quiet - even in summer. Chance to see Dolphins, seals and possibly whales. Lots of wildlife spotting boat trips.
Not so far north, Royal Deeside is very nice and if the children have bikes, the Deeside way is level and provides safe off-road riding on the old railway line.
As mentioned, Fife is worth a look. Add Crail to the list of places to look. If the children were older, they'd love the massive 'secret nuclear bunker' built during the cold war. Don't forget the Falkirk wheel and a trip on a canal boat.
------------- Two drifters off to see the world.
I'm tired of reality, so I'm off to look for a good fantasy.
Second one for Loch Ken here. Had a week there lays year and another booked this August :0)

We are currently doing ten days round on the West Coast.
On the Isle of Skye at the moment, here for another 2 nights then Sands at Gairloch for three nights then another three nights at Clachtoll Beach Campsite.
Our girls are 7 and 5 and loving the trip so far, and so are we! So much to see and do and the sites are reasonably priced as well.
Obviously quite a long way up but the scenery is certainly making it worthwhile!
