I am preparing a tour in south west (from London to Land's End, more or less), visiting New Forest, the Durdle Door, the Cerne Abbas Giant, Exeter, Eden Project, The Merry Maidens, Land's End, Arthur's castle at Tintagel, the Coleridge Cottage, Glastonbury Abbey, Wells, Bath, Cheddar Gorge, Avebury, Stonehenge, Salisbury and Winchester.

is welcome any advice and suggestions, especially if they are based on personal experiences.

Here below an (incomplete) list of questions:
1) Has anyone ever taken the train (in England) charging the bike? I know that reservation is required, but I did not understand whether it is mandatory and what time period must be made.
2) Do you have walked the bike paths British? Are country roads or well-maintained bicycle paths? The gravel stretches are well pedalable?
3) you can enjoy free camping?
4) I would like as much as possible along coastal roads. I'm afraid that because of the very steep cliffs on the streets hasten far away from the coast (at least it seems so from the map). There are scenic stretches or otherwise should go into the picturesque hinterland with its moors?
5) are certainly very rainy regions: in late spring rains are light, continuous or intense and short? There is a lot of wind?

Thank you very much!

That's an ambitious trip! A lot of cycling if that's your main transport.

I have been to most of those places, but in a car on different holidays, they are all worth a visit.

So 1. and 2. I cannot help you.

3. Free camping is frowned upon in the UK, however people do it.

4. There is a coastal path round a lot of the area, much of which may be suitable for cycling, but it's a long way!
You should be able to get maps of cycleways from Tourist Information.

5. We are an island, the weather changes all the time and is totally unpredictable. near the coast expect it to be windy.

1/ Bikes are charged for on some trains and reservation have to be made because there is limited bike space. Some trains have NO bike facilities.

2/ You can only legally ride on roads and bridleways (horse roads). Very few minor roads are unsuitable and all will have a solid surface. The "horse roads" are often unsurfaced and many may be difficult to cycle on.

3/ Free camping is generally not allowed.

4/ The areas away from the coast are just as nice as the coast, and sometimes nicer.

5/ Who can say? Every day can and may be different.

1   Don't know, sorry!   Check with the individual Train Operating Company.

2    There are very few dedicated cycle tracks (like those you might find in the Netherlands, for example). If you look on the Sustrans map you'll see that cyclists usually have to share roads with all other traffic.

3    One of the few places in England where wild camping is allowed (with a few conditions) is a designated area of Dartmoor (link to map is towards the end of the article).

4    If you're really worried after checking your proposed route on a large-scale map, you can often find a suitable inland alternative.

5     You can get any kind of rain, wind and hopefully plenty of calm, sunny weather!

I am familiar with all of the sights you mention (except the maidens) and some are impressive and worth a visit. Others a little less so but I am sure you will enjoy your ambitious trip.

There are few and short dedicated cycle routes. Mostly in towns and cities. There are as said above the Sustrans routes but using normal country roads. However the countryside is still rich in minor country roads that are quiet and well surfaced suitable for cycling. Just avoid the roads with an "A" classification on your map and you will be ok.

Our weather comes in four seasons. Spring summer autumn and winter. It comes in 4 types. Sun, rain, wind, snow. Any of the types can appear in any of the seasons, sometimes on the same day.

The best that can be said is that summer is a little warmer and drier than winter and spring and autumn is a bit in between.

We were in Dorset last year . There are quite a lot of unmanned stations . You can take bikes on the trains . the one we were on you didn't need to book . Some times you have to pay but not always. Just take a chance. This was near wareham . It's nice for cycling around poole . Also Cornwall has some nice cycle paths routes. Not always near railways stations . Wadebrigde is good I think also search on here for trains. We used them when I've went to Bodmin , Hayle ( Cornwall ) Truro. Weymouth. Dorchester , (Dorset ) .
Train travel is not cheap though some are but not all. ( well I don't think they are ).
Take care have fun , good luck

Thank you very much for your answers, I take some more of your kindness:

I asked you of the rain for the problem of wet tent.

Someone had suggested using a sponge. In fact, with the condensation works fine but after a downpour is very difficult to dry the tent in a reasonable time.

If in addition, as is likely, the small rain continues for many hours, I think it is inevitable that I have to pack the tent wet. This is not a problem? How did you find us? I read that someone has used the dryer of the camping to dry the tent , but I fear could damage the tent.
thank you very much and see you soon!
