I doubt you will find a campsite withing walking distance of the NRM, the CC do have Rowntree park, but l dont think they take tents.
You may need to look outside the city, the NRM does have a decent car park, and is easily reached from the coastal sites around Filey, about a 50 min drive away, or twenty min train ride, which will drop you right next door to the NRM.
The last time we visited we stayed at Harrogate, im sorry but im not so sure about the best site for a tent camper, but personally, l would stay at one of the Coastal sites, where there are plenty to choose from to suit your needs, then simply hop onto the local train and cut out the need to navigate down to the city centre.
