We will be travelling to Cardiff this weekend with our tourer. We are planning to take M5, M50, A40 , a449, M4 . Could anyone advise of any suitable stops on the A40 please. We have two small children with us so expect to need plenty.

There is a large layby, with loos, just before Abergavenny on the A40, if that helps. Don't know of a child friendly stop though.

You won't go on the A40 that way.  The M50 becomes the A449 and will take you all the way down to the M4 at the Coldra roundabout in Newport - it's where the Celtic Manor of Ryder Cup fame is.  You then take the M4 to Cardiff - about half an hour. If you take the A40 off the A449 near Abergavenny this will take you in the wrong direction and though you can get back on track at Abergavenny via the A4042, it's a much longer and protracted route through Pontypool and Cwmbran.

There used to be a service area at Raglan just before the A40 junction to Abergavenny but I have a feeling it's closed. There are a few stops on the A449 from Ross towards Newport but they tend to trucker stops - diners and the like. There are loads of lay-bys though, some of them large because of the amount of trucks that use this road.

Pedant Alert.
The A449 and the A40 run together between Ross on Wye and Abergavenny!

Now that Raglan Services are closed the only places to stop on that road are the lay-bys, not very child friendly!!

Thank you very much for your help and advice.   If there are plenty of lay bys then we should be ok at a push, but the picnic spot between raglan and Newport sounds good.   We hope they will have a good sleep but best be prepared !

When you say the A449 and A40 run together do you mean they are the same road or run at the side of each other ?   Sorry if this sounds a bit dim but my road map looks like we leave the A40 just before raglan and join the A449 . It wouldn't be the first time I have misunderstood and took us on a wild goose chase.

They are the same road.

As you come off the M50 it becomes the A40(A449) dual carriageway and that continues to the junction to Raglan and Abergavenny, where the A40 is the slip road to your left, and the A449 continues as the dual carriageway.
You just continue along the dual carriageway.

The picnic area is about 5 miles further on and is generally full of lorries, but they generally leave enough room.

Thank you that is really clear now.   I get a bit paranoid with routes after directing us into a crematorium in Scotland !! I think someone moves road signs before I get there.

Use Google Streetview, that might help.
