Think it is just greed. With our trailer/set up we would be charged for 2 awnings and a gazebo on some sites although taking up less room than some of the family tents being used today.
The owners provide a camp site to make a profit. They wish to maximise their profit. Some (not all) choose to do this by charging for awnings. Others will do so by charging more for a pitch.
Choose a camp site whose pricing total meets your budget. It really doesn't matter how they make up that total or what they call it.
I agree with the above. It doesn't matter to me what the campsite charges for, if the final tariff is more than I want to pay I find another site.
Far be it from me to support the hard done by campsite owner - lol - but years ago most people just had one tent. Some tents were bigger than others but generally took up a fairly small pitch area and the campsite owner could judge how many tents he could accommodate and therefore what his income would be.
These days campers arrive with huge tents, gazebos, canopies, extensions, patio tables and chairs, cars, trailers, utility tents...blow up bouncy castles...what is the poor campsite owner supposed to do about that? He may have to cut down on pitch numbers, thus income. Can you really blame him for charging extra for campers taking up extra room?
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
Come on Stuart, you've been posting on here long enough to know that this moan comes up on a regular basis and the replies are always the same
I do agree with you in a way, the pitch fee should be the same regardless of what's on it, but as Bob61 says, if site owners have to reduce the number of pitches so bigger ones can accommodate everything that campers bring with them then it's understandable that they recoup some of their lost pitch fees by adding a few extra charges here and there.
I just do as suggested above and add everything up, if the total cost comes to more than my budget then I go elsewhere. And for an example of another moan, how about sites which charge solo campers the same as two or more people? - something which I regularly come across and which really gets my goat

It was just a reaction to just how expensive it is to camp in the UK.
Not having done it in the last few years, it was a shock compared with the average price of about £10 a night for pitch+unit+ehu for 2 people, which we are paying in France.
Some campsites do have 'solo campers pitches' but for some reason they seem to think solo camper means a hitch hiker in a one man tent. I would need a pitch big enough to accommodate my 6 man tent but being solo I don't expect to pay for two people.
In France most of the sites have well marked or hedged pitches and this is your ground for your stay. what you do on it is up to you. On most I've stayed at I've had caravan, full awning 3 x 3 man pup tents and the car with still space for sunbathing and relaxing. You pay no extra for any of these. In the UK you have pegs stuck in the ground which normally marks the centre of your pitch, sometimes you're allowed a pup tent which might end up in place of your awning and they might or might not charge you. The others above are right, look for what you want at the price you want to pay if it's to high don't go there and if enough do this they will eventually drop the extra's. My other pet hate on sites is charging extra for the showers. I avoid these sites like the plague and will not stay on them ut of principle.
Just been reading another post on here and looked at the site in questions web site.
No season, same price right through the year.
Caravan/motorhome £25, Trailer Tent £22, Tent according to size £22 to £30, Gazebo (at wardens discretion) £6, ehu £5 two families in one unit will be charged double.
No price increase since 2010,
That's one expensive site. Wonder if they ever get full.
Every campsite charges you to use the shower, it's just that on some campsites it is incorporated within the pitch fee and on other sites it is by meter. You don't expect free water do you?
