Hi all
After enjoying camping as a child I have this year begun taking my own family, including dad and uncle who love it as much as us, the trouble we are having is as a large family finding affordable sites that do not charge per person per night, not including my dad and uncle - they have their own tent and pitch but for us there is myself and husband and 5 children aged 10, 8, 5, 2 and 9 months not to mention a final edition on the way!
We have enjoyed a few local sites whilst we get into the swing of things and I am exhausting the search options trying lots of different criteria, really I guess I'm just looking for any recommendations of family friendly sites that don't charge over the odds, been looking on and off for the bank holiday week for a couple of weeks and getting nowhere, don't really mind where either, willing to travel, can anybody help? Thankyou in advance :)

Not sure I fully understand what you are asking, there are loads of sites with availability for the Bank Holiday weekend at the moment, to be quite honest, in high season you should expect to pay more, and certainly for a lot of people, there are some sites which charge per unit and I am sure that people will be along to let you know of some, but most sites charge for two people, plus extra for additional persons, not unreasonable in my view, the more people, the more that are using the facilities, so the campsite has to pay for hot water etc and maintenance of the facilities.

Many of the sites that I have visited only charge £15 - £20 per night for two, and only a couple of pounds per extra person, that is not particularly over the odds in my view, where are you looking that is charging more than that, you don't say which area you are in or where you are considering, so hard to know where to start in looking for suitable campsites.

Jane.

The Camping and Caravanning Club lists a number of Temporary Holiday Sites, some of which offer little in the way of facilities, perhaps just a water supply and CDP, but others may be held on a field belonging to an adjacent commercial site and with access to their shower/toilet block.

The charges tend to be based on a per-unit-per-night (including two adult club members) basis and in my experience offer excellent value. (A Welsh coast full-facility THS cost us £11 a night a couple of weeks ago.)

Many are held during school holidays, pitches (non-EHU ones at least) rarely need to be booked in advance, and you could stay for one night or for the duration, which might be a couple of weeks or so.

You would have to join the C&CC (around £40) which could be arranged on arrival at the THS, the only other "snag" I can think of is the list of such sites is directly available (in the magazine and online) only to existing members, but if you know a C&CC member, they'd probably be happy to lend you a current or recent magazine, or if not and you have a particular area in mind, ask on here!

Cotswold Holbourne used to charge per pitch with up to 6 people on it. (not sure if they still do) nice site with plenty for kids. Problem you will have is I think 6 is the maximum per pitch. You could split the load between 2 pitches though. Worth a look.

Thankyou all for your replies, we have joined the camping and caravan club online, under 5s are free on the family deal so that's a big help, other sites I've been looking at are £3 per child per night with some quoting under 2s or 18 months free of charge and some charging for adults as well as pitch? lots of things to read through, I had never heard of pup tents or temporary sites so just looking into those now - Thankyou :)
Guess this is all still new to us and will become easier the more experienced we become, also thanks mike for the recommendation, no availability for us at the moment but will definitely give it a try in the future - and good call on splitting our numbers over the 2 pitches :)
Thanks again

Most charge for tents but I do know what you mean when they charge £5 for a child on top of a high pitch fees. We have 3 children and at £5 extra per child the cost goes up by £15 on top of a pitch fee. These figures were only an example but you know what I mean.

Please suggest an area of the country that you would prefer or x amount of travelling distance from where you live.

Thanks for replies guys,

Ang/ken I guess really a play area for the kids (doesn't have to be the bees knees lol) and maybe fishing for dad but again not essential if there is something nearby...

Exactly frazzle it really can bump up the cost,
We are in birmingham so have been looking around Worcester / midlands, don't mind travelling further out , probably a couple of hours, wales even...

:)

I sure the kids will love it at Pillation.

The playgrounds are quite good and they have a small take away on site selling snacks.

Only negative with Pillation is the main shop / reception is about 1/2 mile away up the lane.

Hope you have a great time..

Hi vedge do u mind if I ask you a question about your kampa southwold as I am really stuck? I was just wondering if the sleeping areas were adequately dark in mornings/nights as I know they do not have the special night material! Just from your personal experience? Sorry to bother!!

Heya

Haven't found any problems with that so far, to be honest I hadn't thought about it at all which I guess is a good sign, we have young children so are normally up fairly early anyhows but the hubby has enjoyed a couple of rare lye ins and the light didn't seem to hinder him ;)
