If your traveling in July, take a look at red funnel, they had camping packages for 5 nights camping including return ferry from Southampton for £141.
Wightlink from Portsmouth will be over £100 just for the return sailings, plus their service is poorer, we sailed in the early hours and our sailing was canceled 3 times, apparently due mechanical error on the first sailing, and staff illness on the following 2 crossings. However there were also no services coming the other way, there was us and 4 other cars in the terminal, so I guess it was more likely because there weren't enough passengers to make a profit.
We just paid £207 for a car & 4 people, we traveled on Saturday 2nd August & we came back on the 9th August, very expensive but we managed to use Tesco club are vouchers in the end to get the cost down, the service from Wightlink was not great as the boat was delayed going both ways, we are gong to try red funnel next time !
We paid for our ferry (Red Funnel Southampton to East Cowes) as part of a package with the site we stayed at the cost of the ferry detailed on the invoice was £130 for 4 passengers and a trailer, this was 3rd - 11th Aug.
I would also thoroughly recommend Ninham campsite near Shanklyn. We returned on Tuesday and had a great stay as per my review
