A couple of my Lake District favourites:
Eskdale C&CC - bit out of the way in the western lakes for exploring the area fully, unless you tackle the Hardknott Pass... but great location (check out the Eskdale railway and Muncaster Castle, lovely walks, good pubs in Boot and food at the Woolpack Inn). Very well maintained site and nice views, should be fairly quiet in September. Well regarded on this forum generally.
Langdale NT site - feels like the middle of nowhere but not far to Ambleside. Awesome fell views, walks and some nice pubs in walking distance. Nice facilities.
The Quiet Site near Ullswater is also nice, especially good for kids with small playground and a converted barn makes a cosy old style pub and kids games room. Nice facilities. But can get very busy and pitches are all pea gravel which I don't like much. Nice walks to Aira force waterfall and round the lake, trips on the ullswater steamer...
The 2 sites at Castlerigg near Keswick are also often recommended, although never been personally. Keswick is a nice place to base yourself if you prefer a biggish town. Try the icecream parlour/ gelateria at casa bella and good fish n chips from the old keswickian in town centre. Derwent gondola trips and get the kids up Catbells for achievable family fell walk and awesome views!
Try Hillcroft at Pooley Bridge. Only a 5 min walk into village and the shores of Ullswater. Plenty of activities for kids on or in the lake. Small river comes out of lake which is always good for smaller children to paddle. Campsite has really nice playground as well. Easy to get to and Penrith not far if you need provisions.
------------- I went to the top of the mountain...and looked over the other side!
Eskdale C&CC site is lovely (check out the reviews on this website and you will see what I mean). The western side of the Lakes are much quieter than the more popular areas of Windermere, Ambleside, Keswick etc but is very lovely. Close to Scafell Pike and the coast it is a lovely area and the route over to Conniston via Birker Fell is well worth the visit.
The village of Boot which is where the site is has a couple of nice pubs within walking distance and the narrow gauge railway from Boot to the coast is a must. The next dale to Eskdale is Wastewater which has been voted the most picturesque in the Lakes.
Attached some photos to tempt you to the western side of the lakes. Wherever you go I am sure you will fall in love with the Lakes. Hope you have a great time.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
WOW!! Brilliant pictures many thanks they do indeed tempt me. We normally do Cornwall in september but sfter doing Snowdonia earlier this year and a bit of the Yorkshire dales, thought the lakes would be a good place to visit we are just getting into this walking lark and wish we had done it years ago.
Many thanks for the replys I will check out the sites you all recommended.
Low Wray campsite near Ambleside is another good one. There's lots of popular walks in the area, it's next to the lake for canoeing and Ambleside is always worth a visit (for Zefferelli's and the cinema, never mind the shops and bakeries!).
We've stayed at one of the Keswick sites (can't remember the name but there are 2 very close together). The surrounding hills are amazing to wake up to and there's a bus that can take you into Keswick itself (the Dog n Gun is highly recommended!).
