Hi, I'm starting my planning and research for our main holidays for early July 2015. (yes I know it's early but I do lots of research). We love Padstow area but decided we want a change next year. Thinking of St Ives area, possibly Gwithian Farm Campsite and then heading to Damage Barton at Woolacombe as never been there. We 2 adults, touring caravan and 3 Westies. Polmanter is a No because they won't accept 3 dogs. We dont' required clubs or entertainment, just nice clean facilities and decent pitches. my question is: anyone been to Gwitchian campsite and Damage Barton or are there any others/area I should be considering? Reviews of both sites appear good.

just come back from Gwithian 2wsks ago....fantastic site....would highly recommend.....going to france next year but next time we are going to Cornwall we will def be going to Gwithian again...

Been to both sites. Both sites are good.

Gwithian does not have their own onsite enclosed dog area though so you have to walk your dogs out of the top of the site (towards the sea)to exercise them. The beach is amazing and one of the best beaches in Cornwall but access not for the infirm or unfit (a slog over the dunes). It would pay you to read the 2014 reviews regarding access to the beach for dog owners - seems there have been issues during Summer.
Pub right opposite the site.
You would need to book VERY early and if possible try and get one of the pitches lower down on the park near the showers/reception. Site popular with families so we would only return out of season.

We didn't like Damage Barton - the dog walk is small and not fully secure (unless they have changed it since we have been there - you might want to check). Views are great however. We prefer Warcombe Farm which is also near Woolacombe - some pitches at Warcombe Farm are huge and the dog walk is massive with views over the coast. Warcombe Farm is expensive probably on par with Polmanter but I think we only paid 50pence per dog which is cheap considering the provision they have made for dogs.

I'm supporting Gwithian! We stayed there probably four years ago but would go back if we were in Cornwall again.

The site is lovely, quite low key on the children front, it has good beach access(to an amazing beach with a cafe), handy pub opposite and, I think, a small train into St Ives nearby which cuts down on the driving.

I would also recommend a nearby cafe at Hell's Mouth, good cream teas!

We stayed at Godrevy CC site a couple of weeks ago, just down the road from Gwithian - loved it. Area is fabulous.

Thanks everyone for their replies. Will have a look at both Godrevy & warcombe. Will update you in what I finally decide. Penguin- we stayed at South Lythchett Manor this summer & loved it. Was before school holidays & never had to queue for showers.

I've just noticed on Gwithian Website it says max 2 dogs. I've emailed them to ask. Some sites allow 3 small dogs.

Hayle/Gwithian,and St Ives, great area the best place in the whole of Cornwall, but the beaches are not dog friendly.
on our last trip we tried to go to the dog friendly beach shown on the local information leaflet for Hayle and Gwithian
when we got there we found that the steps to the beach had been washed away and to get to the beach you would have to walk down the Godreavy steps and walk through a no dogs beach to get to the area where dogs are allowed.
NO just before walking down the steps we where told that dog wardens had been waiting at the bottom of the steps and issuing on the spot fines for anyone with a dog that intended to walk through to get to the dog friendly beach.
So if you are looking to walk your dog on the beach its after 7.00pm of chance a fine.

Gwithian is a great site. If I go back to cornwall, I'd go back. There is a Aldi two mins away, which has excellent camping essentials (food).

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Pipcott Fields SCC. for your Woolacombe stay. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/results3.asp?search=pipcott%20fields&by=sitename
It is kept immaculately, is dog friendly and the warden cannot do enough to help but, do be aware it is a CS and this warden insists, quite correctly, on membership if you wish to stay here.

If you read my post reviewing CC Godrevy there is an easy way down to the Dog friendly beach from the access road without going to the Gwithian end of the beach. From the lifeguard hut above the dog friendly beach follow the path heading towards Hayle -DO NOT LEAVE THE CLIFF TOP after approx. 8 minutes you should see a stream running down the beach just after this a path heads down towards the beach, when we were there in July there was an armchair visible on the beach where the path went down the dunes

Hi looking to possibly return to Gwithian Farm again in mid September,with our dog. It's a fantastic sight but we are are bit concerned about the access down the wooden stairs to the dog beach. One member said you could go down them even though the stairs had been blocked off. Could anybody shed any light on this for me? We don't want to be caught out with an on the spot fine from the
dog wardens!

if you are steady on your feet and it has been dry you can get down in sandals with a good tread otherwise follow my instructions on the post above or on the site review I posted

Thanks Dave, I have e-mailed the site as well for information. I know exactly where you mean with regards to the stream. We plan to go out of main holiday season, so have the freedom but need to make sure for our break our Springer Spaniel can enjoy his beach walks too!
